We ran an experiment to test out the latest rumor that drink sizes don’t matter because cups are deceptively manufactured.
There’s been a bit of a “scam” going around the internet lately. And as the purveyors of truth here at That Park Place, why we just cannot let it stand. The scam is that Starbucks, as well as other restaurants, are selling drinks in different sized cups, but the amount of liquid held in the cups is equal. As you might imagine, despite the magic trick played in the video below, the truth is obviously different.

Now we’re not here to figure out how they made this happen in the video above. We’ll leave that to Penn and Teller. However, we did run a quick experiment to figure out if this is even remotely true. And though you may have been gearing up for a class action lawsuit against fast food chains and coffee shops, it turns out we discovered there is no huge trick going around to fool customers into paying more for the same amount of beverage.
Behold, and empty cup:

An empty cup with 16 ounces of water beside it.

Then we added the 16 ounces to the empty cup. This is the same amount as a “tall”.

We then added four more ounces. Behold, a “grande”.

And guess what? When we filled our measuring cup with eight more ounces…

It turns out a venti Starbucks holds exactly the number of ounces we expected… twenty!

Now we didn’t try this with McDonald’s cups or any other fastfood places. However, the cool thing about this is that you can verify the information using your own measuring cup and water. That way, you won’t have to fear that a dastardly establishment is cheating you out of your favorite beverage the next time you hit the interstate for your favorite vacation spot.
Drink with confidence, friends!
