This does not exactly signal health in the troubled Star Wars hotel. Despite this cost likely still being too high for cast members to afford on the type of salary Disney provides, this is major discount nevertheless.
According to Jay of Drunk 3p0 fame, The Walt Disney World Resort is now offering half-off prices for cast members. Though this might look like a friendly gesture of kindness, this comes at the same time the Disney World Cast Member Unions are running with a slogan of “Say No to Poverty.” That creates quite the sight. On one hand you have cast members claiming they can’t afford to live on Disney’s wages, now on the other hand you have Disney handing them “voyages” aboard the Galactic Starcruiser for a few thousand dollars less.
These don’t seem congruent.
So what’s really going on? I have a feeling it’s a bit more murky.
What I think is happening is that Disney is counting on poor cast members offering this to their families and friends so long as they get to go along. And you’d better believe every Disney vlogger is going to be hitting up their cast member buddies to get some reservations. How that will play out given that we’re hearing the hotel is often very lightly attended… who can say?
