Disney+ Actually Censored Bear in the Big Blue House

Not even a beloved children’s show is safe from the Disney+ censors. While they allow things some may find extremely objectionable, gender roles aren’t one of them.

For those of you hoping that The Walt Disney Company is going to come to its senses, don’t hold your breath. While the company may be attempting to moderate in some ways, in other ways it is just as fully composed of wackos with an agenda as ever. Today’s example comes to us from an intrepid investigator for That Park Place, Jonas Campbell. Mr. Campbell noticed that Bear in the Big Blue House was missing a number of episodes once it hit Disney+ yesterday.

Here’s the note he sent us:

Update. Several episodes of Bear in the Big Blue House appear to be missing. Season 1 Episodes 13 and 18 for starters with more missing out of Season 2. I’m going to look into the full list and the content of those episodes to understand why.

Missing episodes are not uncommon for Disney+.
1) Sometimes two-parters are condensed into a single episodes on streaming. This does not appear to be the case based on episode lengths and the fact that this is pre-school programming.
2) There is an episode of the Little Mermaid Animated Series (I think the Pilot) that is missing as well but I’ve seen it and there’s no apparent reason for it to not be included.
3) There’s an episode of the 1994 Fantastic Four animated series that’s missing from Disney+ for good reason. It starts with a Skrull spaceship crashing into the World Trade Center (the Skrull’s are shape-shifting terrorists and this episode would have aired in the mid-90s, well before 9/11/2001). I can send you a copy if you’d like confirmation that I’m not just blowing smoke on that one.
Could be something, could be nothing. I’m thinking it might just be something that was okay to say in the mid-90s that’s not okay to say in the 2020s.

Unfortunately our story doesn’t end there. After further work to see what exactly Disney+ left out, we discovered that it was as you might have suspected. Disney specifically kept an episode off of Disney+ that references a mom cooking dinner for her family.

From Jonas again:

A surprisingly based quote from Bear in Bear in the Big Blue House. “If a bear does not put berries on the table, then he or she is not a real bear.” The episode is about work. The episode is Working Like a Bear. Just to confirm, this is one of the episodes that didn’t make it to Disney+ that we’re talking about. The episode also has a song about mom’s making dinner and dads doing dad things.

We looked into it and sure enough, the episode Disney+ removed from the show is all about work roles. What’s really funny is that the little bear character, Ocho, is a girl bear who wants to be a firefighter. The show makes special effort to affirm that girls can be firefighters, yet two decades later it’s so scandalous it can’t be on television because it suggests bears need to work to provide food and moms sometimes cook dinners for their families. You can’t make this stuff up.

Here’s the archived episode in case you want to check it out for yourself. You’ll note it’s about as tame as you can imagine.
