Disney Lucasfilm Appears to Downgrade Anakin Skywalker on Official Star Wars Website

Attendees at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) got a big surprise at the Star Wars booth. According to an official display on the show floor, Anakin Skywalker only “had the potential to become the most powerful Jedi ever.” That same phrase has been added to the character biography on the Star Wars website.

Anakin Skywalker Downgrade

Now fans are debating if Anakin has received a downgrade, or if this was the truth all along.

The Official Bio

The official bio for Anakin Skywalker on StarWars.com seems to confirm the downgrade on the legendary Chosen One’s power level.

“Discovered as a slave on Tatooine by Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker had the potential to become one of the most powerful Jedi ever. Some even believed he was the prophesied Chosen One who would bring balance to the Force. Always pushing the limits of his Jedi training, seeking to excel and live up to his reputation, Skywalker’s passion often brought him into conflict with his mentor, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi. A hero of the Clone Wars, Anakin was caring and compassionate, but suffered from a deep fear of loss that would prove to be his downfall.”

The young Jedi Anakin, as we well know, became the evil Sith Lord Darth Vader. In 1999’s The Phantom Menace, the question is raised whether or not Anakin is the Chosen One, destined to bring balance to the Force. Over the years, George Lucas has confirmed that this was his intent. So it would seem a logical assumption that Anakin Skywalker would also be the most powerful, and that this apparent downgrade isn’t just a change in verbiage, but a shift in how Disney Lucasfilm wants us to view him.

Fan Reaction is Lukewarm – Which Might be Lucasfilm’s Real Objective

From a fan perspective, all of the legacy characters have received downgrades, if not in their ability to wield the Force, at least in their heroism. While those currently running Lucasfilm can make Han Solo an absentee father, and send Luke Skywalker off into lonely isolation, Anakin/Vader’s trajectory is set. Downgrading his power from “best” to “could have been best,” is the only way to diminish him.

Luke Skywalker Green Milk

But this time, rather than raising the ire of passionate fans, this move seems to have done very little.

Fan reaction on X has been tepid at best. At the time of this writing, the post from @sw_holocrom that was one of the first to break the news, has only received 137 replies.

Many of the reactions are in agreement, or theorize that Anakin only reached his full power potential when he became Vader, and therefore was no longer a Jedi. Others suggest that Luke was more powerful in the ways of the Force, making this Anakin Skywalker downgrade more of a reinterpretation than an outright dismissal.

However, it should be noted that previous changes to legacy characters by Disney were met with outrage. Is it possible that the lack of ran outcry over this downgrade of Anakin Skywalker could mean that Star Wars fans no longer care enough to voice their opinions or even pay attention to such matters anymore? Has interest (and, more importantly, passion) eroded from that Galaxy Far, Far Away?

We May Know More Soon – But Does it Matter?

With Hayden Christensen set to reprise the role of Anakin Skywalker in Ahsoka Season 2, fans may soon have a clearer sense of whether this Anakin Skywalker downgrade is reflected on screen or merely in wording. The only real question is, after all that the fans have been through over the last few years, will enough of them show up for it to matter?

I remember reading in what I think were official sources that his injuries weakened his connection to the force, although he was still very powerful. That’s how Palpatine kept him as a lapdog.

That weakening is because machines can’t sense or use the Force and implants hinder one’s connections. Both legs were severed and several internal organs were badly damaged by the superheated air, so he needed cybernetics to survive and function. Luke’s arm had a similar effect on him.

This is a downgrade. Lucasarts under Kennedy can’t stand the popularity of legacy characters and is determined to defame them however they can. What they fail to realize is that you can’t just undo decades of canon and expect whatever fans are left to roll over and accept it. This is going to just make their already-bad situation worse.

Woke Disney is purging white men from Star Wars.
