Academy Award–winning actor Robert Downey Jr. has been named the official godparent of Disney Adventure, Disney Cruise Line’s largest vessel. The announcement comes less than three weeks before the ship’s maiden voyage from Singapore on March 10, 2026.

But not the godfather. The gender-neutral terms was used across several announcements.

Disney Cruise Line, a division of The Walt Disney Company, issued a statement in which Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and incoming CEO, described Downey’s role as godparent and highlighted his connection to the entertainment franchise that helped define modern Disney cinema.

“Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line’s tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure,” D’Amaro said.

In his own remarks, Downey said it was an honor to serve in the ceremonial role, stating, “It’s impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed … I’ll do my darndest.”

The Disney Adventure is set to carry approximately 6,700 passengers and 2,500 crew members. It will feature multiple themed areas inspired by Marvel characters and experiences, including Marvel Landing, which is expected to include the ship’s first roller coaster at sea. The vessel is positioned as a centerpiece of Disney Cruise Line’s expansion.

Broader Cultural Conversations Around Corporate Language

It’s interesting to note Disney’s consistent choice to use the term godparent rather than gendered terms like godfather or godmother. That choice is part of a broader cultural backdrop in which corporations and entertainment brands are switching to gender-neutral language in public communication.

This appointment reflects a longstanding maritime tradition in which a chosen individual or group is named to bestow symbolic good fortune on a vessel before its first sailing. Though traditionally the person is designated as a godmother or godfather. Historically, ship godmothers were chosen from prominent social circles, including wives or daughters of naval officers, shipbuilders, politicians, or other influential figures. Men serving as godfathers have been much less common, though it is not unprecedented. Male sponsors have generally been selected for ships with military or corporate significance, or in cases where the individual had a particularly notable public profile.

Disney has appeared at the center of cultural debates in recent years over inclusivity and editorial choices in its entertainment offerings. News coverage of shifts in programming on Disney+ and internal diversity initiatives has generated controversy among audience segments.

From multiple instances of same-sex parents in children’s show, to genderless characters such as Raine Whispers in The Owl House and Lake Ripple in Elemental.

The choice to use this gender-neutral term seems to be another small nod to Disney’s journey away from traditional family values in an effort to reach a more “modern” audience.

God forbid I give Disney a pass, but in this particular case, to use the proper vernacular, RDJ would not be a Godfather but a Godparent for this honorific, encompassing all the kiddos. It depends of the situation, “I am a Godparent” isn’t implying you are trying to stay “Gender Neutral”. However, having typed that, and bleaching my brain, of COURSE it stands out as yet another symptom of Disney continuing to flog the DEI dead horse. It’s lame.

I agree. In addition, while a small note, “Godfather” can have some negative overtones. It is rarely used so the point of reference most people have would be the unflattering comparison to the mafia movies bearing that title. I’m not sure that is something Disney wants to infer in any way for its family friendly cruise line.

Especially with RDJ’s role as one of the Granddaddies of evil in the Marvel Universe, Dr. Doom.

That said, I expect it really is a capitulation to modern language. At least it is one that COULD have different interpretations.

Who cares? Disney is gay, the MCU is dead, and Josh D’Amaro gives blumpkins to Gavin Newsom.

This is an offer I can refuse.
