The Walt Disney Company has released a statement regarding Russia and the invasion of Ukraine:
Given the unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and the tragic humanitarian crisis, we are pausing the release of theatrical films in Russia, including the upcoming Turning Red from Pixar. We will make future business decisions based on the evolving situation. In the meantime, given the scale of the emerging refugee crisis, we are working with our NGO partners to provide urgent aid and other humanitarian assistance to refugees.

While the statement is in line with much of western thinking about the invasion of Ukraine, it does put Disney in a very difficult position should China decide to invade or overtake Taiwan. Just as Russia has wanted to fully control Ukraine, so has China wanted full control of the island of Taiwan. For The Walt Disney Company, however, the danger in opposing political actions by China would be far greater. With two theme park resorts in mainland China, the company could stand to lose many billions of dollars in investments should China make similar military actions. While this is hypothetical at this point, it’s something worth watching very closely.
