Disney+ and the ABC broadcast network have released the first official teaser trailer for an upcoming The Muppet Show special featuring Sabrina Carpenter and developed by Seth Rogen, set to premiere on February 4, 2026. The special marks the first major television event tied to the franchise in decades and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the original series.

The teaser focuses on Kermit the Frog as he enters the iconic Muppet Theatre, turns on the lights, and sets down his coffee mug.

The official synopsis describes it as so: “Music, comedy, and a whole lot of chaos are bound to ensue when The Muppets once again take the stage of the original Muppet Theatre with their very special guest, Sabrina Carpenter!”

The Muppet Show promos announce Carpenter as the guest star, with Seth Rogen as the executive producer.

Revival of a Variety Format

The announced Seth Rogen Muppet Show special is intended to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original series, which aired from 1976 through 1981. The original show combined puppetry, music, humor, and celebrity guests in a live-studio variety format. Carpenter joins the list of guests that include voices such as Elton John and Johnny Cash

According to production notes shared with the press, the new special will bring back many of the familiar characters to produce a show within the narrative. Muppet performers — including Bill Barretta, Dave Goelz, Eric Jacobson, Peter Linz, David Rudman and Matt Vogel — are expected to return to perform the classic characters.

The special is being directed by Alex Timbers, who also serves as an executive producer. Other executive producers include Carpenter, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee, David Lightbody, Leigh Slaughter, Michael Steinbach and Albertina Rizzo.

Production and Creative Credits

The project is a collaboration between multiple production companies, including 20th Television, Disney Branded Television, The Muppets Studio and Point Grey Pictures.

The reported credits reflect a blend of talent from various areas of the entertainment industry, including both long-time collaborators with the Muppet franchise and contributors from outside it.

Teaser Trailer and Release Plans

The trailer offers the first significant promotional look at the upcoming special. It features key characters engaging in rehearsal-style scenes on the familiar red curtain stage, while Carpenter interacts with the cast. Specific narrative details remain limited in the teaser itself.

In addition to the special event, all five seasons of the original The Muppet Show are available to stream on Disney+, providing historical context for audiences ahead of the February release.

The special will air simultaneously on Disney+ and ABC, expanding its reach across streaming and broadcast platforms.

Context Within the Franchise

The upcoming Seth Rogen Muppet Show project continues Disney’s ongoing use of the franchise, which has appeared in various forms on its streaming service in recent years, including Muppets Mayhem and other Muppet-related content.

The one-time revival of the show brings back what Time described in 1978 as “the most popular television entertainment now being produced on Earth”. But without the creative direction of Henson, can Rogen and Carpenter live up to their predecessors? Guess we’ll wait and see.
