Back to school curriculum controversies we go…
The Walt Disney Company is committing to the donation of a portion of Pride 2022 merchandise profits to the LGBTQ+ advocacy group, GLSEN. The advocacy group has taken the policy in the past of pushing for sexual orientation and gender theory curriculum in public schools. As a result, the allegation is making its way across the internet and within politics that Disney is thereby funding the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender theory teachings in schools.
According to journalist, Jacob Smith:
Earlier this month, it was uncovered that a portion of the sales expected from Disney’s upcoming 2022 Pride Merch collection will be donated to GLSEN (pronounced “glisten”), a lobbying firm with the goal of pushing an LGBTQ curriculum in the U.S. public school system. In 2020, Disney donated $100,000 to GLSEN in support of their work as part of that year’s “Pride Month.”
This is not the first time Disney has backed the controversial push for LGBTQ+ issues in various levels of public education. In 2021, the “This Is Me” Disney+ special featured Andrew Levitt (known by the stage name Andrew Levitt) in drag encouraging viewers to donate to GLSEN. And, of course, Disney has likewise taken a political position in opposition to Florida legislation that forbids classroom instruction over sexual orientation and gender theory in grades K-3.
As for the response to this news, it would seem that would be based on each individual’s belief as to the appropriateness of such education for small children in government-funded education systems.
