Inflation is a cruel mistress. Unfortunately for Disneyland guests, that mistress is throwing her weight around abundantly as of late.

It started with the MagicKey announcements. The quasi annual passes that feature significant dates of unavailability were brought back yesterday with plenty of complaints to go along with them. Not only were there plenty of new “fine print” details that stripped Disneyland frequenters of rights and benefits, the prices across the board had jumped by an impressive 16%. Bob Chapek wasn’t kidding when he put the idea of park ticket increase being on the table!

Of course the Disneyland spiel doesn’t mention anything of the sort:

Unlock the Fun, Magic and Excitement of The Happiest Place on Earth

When you’re a Magic Key holder, the Disneyland Resort is your land—you’re a townsperson on Main Street, U.S.A., a galactic citizen of Batuu, a hero at Avengers Campus, a local at Pixar Pier and beyond. You belong to the community of core Disneyland fans who all share a passion and love for the parks.

Magic Key Details

As you may know, we have paused new sales of Magic Key passes. At this time, current Magic Key holders have the opportunity during their renewal window to renew into one of several passes that are being made available for this year’s program. The quantity of passes and pass types available for renewal or purchase may be limited and passes or a pass type may not be available from time to time or at any given time. The Magic Key program provides reservation-based admission to one or both Disneyland Resort theme parks where you’ll make memories visit after visit. Magic Key passes feature a variety of reservation-based admission opportunities, pricing options, experiences, and savings on food, beverages and merchandise.

Magic Key holders enjoy admission opportunities, value, convenience—plus magical extras—at the Disneyland Resort. Whether you consider yourself a Mouseketeer, Space Ranger, Jedi or superhero, there is something for everyone as a Magic Key holder.

But maybe more concerning for Disneyland visitors is that we’re all going to be paying more… and that more starts today.

According to WDWNT, it’s not just annual passes that are going up in price. Many or most of the food and drink items at Disneyland have also gone up in price as of today. Some items are up fifty cents, others a dollar and some items are all the way doubled beyond what they were yesterday. Ouch!

What’s impressive is that just a few days ago, bloggers were noting that Disneyland food prices had risen by a whopping 12% in two years. That’s not too far off the unfortunate rate of inflation right now and perhaps it is the hard part of keeping ticket prices locked into 2019 rates. However, when you then add the price increases that just hit today, the number begins to escape the normal inflation trajectory by a good bit.

It seems that in the age of inflation and post-pandemic vacations, Disney Parks are a very expensive adventure for only those who can afford such things. We’re about to need to go back to those half-day ticket options just to get people past the turnstiles with enough money to buy a corndog.

After all, the hot dogs are an upper class snack nowadays.
