Why does Japan get to have all the cool stuff? Tokyo Disney is getting a new nighttime spectacular that has everyone else feeling jealous.
It is a $70 million investment in a nighttime spectacular. That’s more than the internally reported budget for Harmonious I’ve heard from backchannels. And yet, somehow, “Believe! Sea of Dreams” coming to DisneySea in Tokyo looks like it is quadruple the investment. That’s because instead of abstract rings with crazy bending arms, Imagineers have taken what they’ve learned from Harmonious and World of Color then combined all of that into what Rivers of Light should have been. At the end, of all those pieces coming together, we get what is likely to become the best nighttime show at any Disney Park in the world.
No wonder it’s going into a Tokyo park where the investments and control is held by the Oriental Land Company. Disney only comes in to help with the upgrades — OLC does the ordering. And in this case, like so many other cases, the sky is the limit when it comes to the creativity OLC calls for.
Throw away Harmonious and put this in Epcot. Throw away Fantasmic! and put this in Hollywood Studios. Heck, modify it and put it in Animal Kingdom. This is what fans would go crazy for!
“Believe! Sea of Dreams” comes to Tokyo’s Disney Sea on November 11th. We’ll have full coverage and the complete video once the experience has its first performance.
