Doctor Who actor Ncuti Gatwa recently shared that an upcoming episode of the once-loved British science fiction series will lean into the “very leftist, liberal bubble” that Gatwa lives in every day.

As reported by The Daily Mail, Gatwa was discussing audience reaction to him being cast as the Doctor in the series.

At one point he stated, “‘I think I felt a particular affinity to Jodie [Whittaker] just because of the shared struggle, as in the Doctor’s never been seen like this before, and what that means for yaysayers, naysayers. How do you navigate that? She was so generous. With her story and her experience of it all.”

He continued, “I was a little bit braced for impact and then was very pleasantly surprised because it was the antithesis [of what I was expecting]. But then, also, what’s scary is that we all live in [social media] bubbles. I remember scrolling on Twitter and being like, ‘Oh my gosh. I’m so loved.'”

Gatwa then predictably accused critics of being racists, “And then I clicked on one tweet that wasn’t as positive. And then that opened up an entire world of the opposite feeling. “Oh no. There they are.” Seeing the anagrams of my name [made into a racial slur] was just lovely.”

From there, he promised the show would lean into the social bubble he personally lives in, “But it was interesting. As I say, I live in a very leftist, liberal bubble. And in fact, there’s a really great episode coming up next year where we lean into that.”

Gatwa went on to confirm the show would discuss his race, “Yes, definitely. It would be stupid if we didn’t.”

Ironically, after accusing his critics of racism, Gatwa made it clear he’s prejudiced against people with white skin as he lied, “The Doctor has always walked into unknown situations and taken charge with authority. Historically, there’s only really one demographic of people that are able to do that – and it’s certainly not a woman, and it’s certainly not someone black. Thank God, things are changing.”

Gatwa made his appearance as the 15th Doctor in the third of three 60th Anniversary specials titled “The Giggle.” He will next appear in the Christmas special “The Church on Ruby Road.”

The episode will see Gatwa’s Doctor team up with Millie Gibson’s Ruby Sunday as they take on a number of baby-eating goblins.

The official description states, “Long ago on Christmas Eve, a baby was abandoned in the snow. Today, Ruby Sunday meets the Doctor, stolen babies, goblins and perhaps the secret of her birth…”
