On the day she moved to Nashville, 18-year-old Dolly Parton met Carl Dean outside the Wishy Washy Laundromat.  She described being, “surprised and delighted,” that, “he looked at my face,” and, “seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about.” Two years later they were married. Though never having children of their own, Dean was reportedly active in raising her younger siblings (Dolly was the forth of twelve). Now after nearly 60 years of marriage Carl has died at the age of 82.

His musical tastes ran less to country and more to Rock and Roll. Dolly covered a few of his favorite songs over the years, like Free Bird and Stairway to Heaven. A bank teller’s crush on him inspired the classic song Jolene which Dolly described as, “an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one.” And Dolly said that “her song “My Blue Tears” was one of his favorites she ever wrote.

His wife once joked that, “a lot of people say there’s no Carl Dean, that he’s just somebody I made up to keep other people off me.” He owned an asphalt paving company in Nashville and lived a private life, a life to which his wife could retreat from stardom.

In an era of media saturation, when people know the comings and goings of celebrities, their tryst, liaisons, dalliances, and affairs, it will seem strange that so few people will know the name of a man whose wife is an American icon. But a life that can be measured in clout or follower counts is a small life indeed. Instead, Carl was a brother, an uncle, and a husband. Few lives can be measured greater if those things are done well.

His family has asked for privacy but in a statement, Dolly has said, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”

That Park Place and all of our YouTube partner friends and family send deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to those grieving the loss of Dolly’s beloved husband. Here’s to Heaven.

Mad Lemming

Sixty years of marriage. I can’t imagine how painful it is to lose someone you’ve been with that long. Something in me died when my cat of fourteen years passed on Monday, but to lose a spouse of *sixty years*? My condolences to Mrs. Parton and everyone else that loved Carl Dean.
