The upcoming Harry Potter adaptation is facing renewed scrutiny following an interview with one of its young stars. Lox Pratt, who plays Draco Malfoy in the HBO Max series, recently told Variety that he plans to put his “own spin” on the character. The comment suggests his portrayal may differ in meaningful ways from the version seen in the original films.

Of course, any actor stepping into an established role is expected to bring something new—regardless of age. Still, for a show already drawing questions about its fidelity to the source material, Pratt’s remarks have left some fans wondering just how different this new interpretation will be.
Expectations for a “Faithful” Adaptation
When Warner Bros. announced the Harry Potter television series, it did so with the promise that the show would be more faithful to the books than the films. Each novel is expected to span an entire season, allowing more time to explore the characters and include material the movies had to leave out. The book series has remained popular for decades, as have the films, and expectations for the reboot are extremely high.
However, the casting of Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape sparked immediate backlash. Critics pointed out that the actor does not match the physical description of the character in J.K. Rowling’s novels. Fans have also noted that Harry’s relatives, the Dursleys, substantially diverge from their book-accurate portrayals.

Further discussion followed reports that Arabella Stanton’s Hermione Granger would receive original material created specifically for the series. Some fans have even taken issue with the fact that Dominic McLaughlin does not share Harry’s signature green eyes.
Now, it appears HBO Max may also be taking a new approach with Draco Malfoy.
Reimagining Draco Malfoy
“He’s still very much Draco, but I’m putting my own spin on him,” Lox Pratt told Variety. “He’s definitely got more layers.”
This raises a broader question: do fans want a more layered take on one of modern literature’s most memorable antagonists? In the novels, Draco is introduced as a bully to Harry and his friends. Over time, it becomes clear that he is a product of his upbringing—spoiled, bigoted, and, at times, cowardly.

Draco echoes his father’s prejudices against non-pure-blood wizards and seeks his approval. Harry consistently outshining him only fuels his resentment. Some might argue this is already rich material, even without encouraging a new actor to put his own spin on Draco Malfoy.
“Draco’s loved, but he’s got this horrible, crippling family pressure. He’s not quite who he wants to be the entire time and can’t live up to his father’s expectations,” Pratt explained, suggesting the show may not stray too far from the books.
A First Glimpse—and Lingering Questions
HBO Max did not show much of Pratt’s Draco Malfoy in the first trailer. “I’m glad they kept it quite minimal and it wasn’t too exposing,” Lox said. “And I’m glad it was very quick-as-a-flash. I’m excited for people to see it because he’s so different to how Draco was in the films.”
Whether Draco Malfoy remains true to his characterization in the books and earlier films—or becomes part of the growing list of changes—remains to be seen. But fans will be watching closely when the series arrives on the streamer later this year.
