Box office projections for Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two continue to increase as it approaches its official theatrical release. The projections are also increasing as critic reviews overwhelmingly praise the film.

Box Office Pro originally projected at the beginning of the month the film would bring in between $50 million and $75 million in its opening weekend and go on to bring in between $125 million and $195 million in its entire domestic run.

At the time the outlet detailed, “Pre-sales for this sequel have come on strong in early days, most notably in premium formats such as IMAX, as they pace similarly to the first film’s during initial sales days, putting it well ahead of films like Mission: Impossible – Dead ReckoningThe Flash, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

Those projections have since increased. In their most recent forecast, Box Office Pro projects the movie will now gross between $65 million and $80 million in its opening weekend.

Furthermore, the outlet projects the film will gross between $164 million and $213 million in its entire domestic run.

For comparison, Dune: Part One grossed $41 million in its opening weekend back in 2021. The film went on to gross $109.9 million domestically. It did add another $324.8 million internationally for a global gross of $434.8 million.

Director Denis Villeneuve most recent film other than Dune: Part One was Blade Runner 2049. That film grossed $92 million at the domestic box office and another $165.7 million internationally for a global gross of $257.8 million worldwide back in 2017.

Dune: Part Two reportedly has a production budget of $190 million. That means the film needs to make $475 million to break even, which covers the film’s marketing costs as well as the split that theaters take from the grosses.

Based on the current projections it’s possible the film will indeed do that, but it will be close. The film will need strong word of mouth and good legs.
