Since Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour for making political statements onstage, Sheeran has attempted to keep the focus on music. However, pressure from activist groups has continued to mount, particularly after his band and opening acts quit the tour.

On Saturday night, before his first concert since the controversy erupted, Sheeran made the statement he had seemingly hoped to avoid.

“Before I play some songs tonight, I hope it’s okay if I say a few words about this last week,” Sheeran told the audience at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field, according to Variety.

Sheeran apologized for his handling of the dispute and acknowledged making mistakes while confronting several difficult decisions.

“I don’t want to disappoint fans, and I’ve never wanted to be an activist musician,” he said. “But this has put me in the middle of an important and passionate argument about freedom of speech and the most complex political issue on the planet.”

Sheeran said he had avoided becoming a political commentator because he wanted his concerts to promote unity rather than division.

However, the mounting pressure apparently convinced him that remaining publicly neutral was no longer possible.

“What happened in Israel at a … music festival on Oct. 7 was horrific and compounded centuries of Jewish pain,” Sheeran said.

He then sharply criticized Israel’s military response and its treatment of Palestinians.

“What is happening in Gaza is catastrophic and unjustifiable and disproportionate,” he continued. “My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilian lives, of children’s lives, and this systemic injustice we’re seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked.”

Sheeran said he was still listening and learning because he did not know enough about the complex conflict. He also said he was considering how he could meaningfully help its victims.

Sheeran Previously Tried to Keep Politics Offstage

Following Macklemore’s removal, Sheeran wrote on Instagram that the decision was not his.

He explained that certain venues threatened to cancel his concerts if Macklemore remained scheduled to appear. Sheeran said he sought a mutual resolution, but the final decision remained beyond his control. Macklemore’s contract was with the promoter rather than Sheeran.

The singer acknowledged having personal views about Gaza but said he had deliberately kept them private.

“There is a reason I do not use my professional platform for politics,” he wrote. “Those who come to my show do not expect a political forum.”

Yet the intensifying backlash appears to have forced him to break that silence.

Fans Support Sheeran Despite Protests

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered outside Lincoln Financial Field before Sheeran delivered his statement. Protesters waved Palestinian flags and chanted “Free Palestine,” according to Fox News.

Despite the public backlash, Reuters reported that many fans attending the Philadelphia concert remained supportive. Some said they came for Sheeran’s music rather than his political opinions.

The controversy placed Sheeran in an increasingly difficult position. His effort to keep politics away from his concerts failed to satisfy activists demanding a declaration.

However, addressing the conflict may frustrate fans who appreciated the “joy, escapism, and love” Sheeran previously said he wanted his concerts to provide.
