Bethesda has officially named its next fantasy role-playing game The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel, giving the long-awaited successor to Skyrim a subtitle more than eight years after its initial announcement.
The November 3 reveal came as part of Bethesda Game Studios’ 40th anniversary celebrations. A short teaser introduces the name and points players toward Hammerfell, offering a clearer idea of where their next journey through Tamriel will take them.

Anyone hoping the announcement would also deliver gameplay or a release date, however, will have to keep waiting. The studio says development continues, but further details remain some time away.
Bethesda Reveals Sentinel For Its 40th Anniversary
Bethesda Game Studios announced the title on X, inviting fans to see whether they had correctly guessed the name. Xbox Wire also published the official title reveal, displaying the Sentinel logo.
The roughly minute-long teaser shows sand blowing away to uncover an Elder Scroll before revealing the game’s title. The imagery connects the announcement to the series’ mysterious artifacts without showing the adventure players will actually experience.

The title reveal also appeared at the end of a video looking back at Bethesda’s 40-year history. Bethesda Game Studios director and executive producer Todd Howard used the anniversary celebration to introduce the name of a project that has prompted years of questions from fans.
SENTINEL is the next chapter of The Elder Scrolls. An incredible way for @BethesdaStudios to mark 40 years of building worlds that speak to millions of players across generations. Congratulations to the team, past and present. https://t.co/RVWIs2oSW9

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma celebrated the announcement, calling Sentinel the next chapter of The Elder Scrolls and congratulating Bethesda’s current and former teams. Her message highlighted the studio’s four decades of creating worlds enjoyed by generations of players.
Sentinel Points To Hammerfell
Sentinel takes its name from a city in Hammerfell, the homeland of the Redguards.
The teaser also includes a passage attributed to Yazar, identified as a Moth Priest serving High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell.
“The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone,” the passage reads.

The reference to Hammerfell reinforces the setting suggested by the title and desert imagery, while the ominous wording leaves the central conflict unexplained. Bethesda has yet to detail the protagonist, the factions players will encounter, or how much of the province they will be able to explore.
For now, fans have a location and a few story hints to discuss, but little basis for firm conclusions about the adventure’s scope.
Bethesda Says More Details Are Still Some Time Away
There is still no announced release date or launch window, and the reveal does not establish which platforms will receive the game.
In a follow-up post, Bethesda confirmed development remains underway while tempering expectations for another update.
Thank you for 40 years of shared memories. We can’t wait to make even more together with The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Development continues, and while it’ll be some time before we’re ready to share more, it feels great to finally reveal the name and location with you.

After more than eight years, a title and setting may feel like a modest payoff for such a lengthy wait. The announcement gives fans something concrete, but it does little to answer their larger questions about the game.
The Elder Scrolls VI was originally announced in 2018. With Skyrim approaching its 15th anniversary this month, the sequel’s title reveal underscores the unusually long gap between mainline installments.
Sentinel gives the project a more definite identity. The next substantial reveal will need to show what Bethesda has built—and give players a clearer sense of when they can finally experience it.
