Pixar’s next big release, Elio, is shaping up to be one of the most expensive animated films ever made—with sources now estimating its production cost at nearly $300 million before marketing. That eye-watering figure puts the Elio budget in the same cost bracket as major live-action blockbusters, and far beyond what’s typical for an animated feature—even by Pixar standards.

The average cost of producing a high-end Pixar film typically falls between $150–$200 million. That includes films like like Inside Out, Toy Story 4, and Elemental. Competitors like Illumination and DreamWorks often get the job done for under $130 million. Only Tangled, released in 2010 after years of restarts and rewrites, comes close to Elio’s price tag at a reported $260 million. Now, Elio may claim the top spot as the most expensive animated movie ever made.

And the final bill isn’t even in yet. With marketing likely to cost another $100 million globally, the total financial outlay could rise well beyond $400 million, putting enormous pressure on Elio to perform. Industry estimates suggest the film would need to gross at least $700–800 million worldwide just to break even—a tough task for an original IP with no franchise backing.

Creative Turmoil Behind the Scenes

The budget bloat is only part of Elio’s troubled backstory. Originally announced in 2022 and scheduled for a March 2024 release, the film was delayed by over a year to June 2025. That delay came after extensive reworking behind the scenes, including a complete creative overhaul.

Director Adrian Molina was quietly replaced in 2024 under the guise of a “scheduling conflict”—a phrase no one in the industry takes at face value. Though Molina still holds a co-directing credit, the film is now being steered by Domee Shi (Turning Red) and Madeline Sharafian.

Multiple sources told World of Reel that Elio became a source of stress for Pixar chief Pete Docter, who reportedly pushed for large-scale rewrites after concerns were raised about the film’s tone and direction. Trailers released in 2023 and 2025 paint very different pictures. Early footage presented a more somber sci-fi tone, highlighting emotional distance between Elio and his working mother. The latest trailer, however, pivots to a comedic space adventure, with character roles completely swapped and a brighter aesthetic.

Even the voice cast has seen shakeups. Zoe Saldaña now voices Elio’s aunt, Olga Solis—replacing America Ferrera, who exited the project amid more reported “scheduling issues.” The change mirrors the broader rewrites that affected narrative structure, pacing, and character arcs across the board.

A Pattern of Problems at Pixar

Elio isn’t the first rocky project for Pixar in recent years. The studio was hit hard during the pandemic, with Soul, Luca, and Turning Red debuting exclusively on Disney+ rather than in theaters. Then there was Lightyear, a critical and commercial disappointment that led many to question Pixar’s creative direction.

While Elemental eventually found some success through word-of-mouth and Inside Out 2 was a huge financial win, the studio’s reputation for consistent excellence has taken repeated hits.

Elio's mother

If Elio stumbles, it could raise serious questions about Pixar’s ability to manage original content in today’s high-risk theatrical landscape. And with Disney now more cautious than ever in its spending, a $300 million gamble may not sit well with investors—especially if it doesn’t pay off.

I’m so glad that I don’t have small children, that I took to every Pixar movie during their childhood, anymore. That way I never have to tell them “NO” to pixar, disney, et all. 16-12 year olds joke with me about how not cool disney is. We spend $0 as a family with disney now. Seriously. $0.

I assume he’s wearing that patch after taking one in the eye from any number of disney’s middle management team.
