Media billionaire John Malone predicts a massive partnership between Elon Musk and the Ellison family’s Skydance that could transform Hollywood’s newest entertainment powerhouse.

Elon Musk could be preparing to make an enormous move into Hollywood, with billionaire media mogul John Malone predicting that the SpaceX founder will invest as much as $10 billion into Skydance, the entertainment conglomerate controlled by David Ellison and backed by his father, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.

The potential arrangement would come just weeks after Skydance completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, bringing some of Hollywood’s most recognizable entertainment properties under a single corporate umbrella.

According to Deadline, Malone made the prediction Wednesday during a conversation with Liberty Global CEO Mike Fries at the Paley Center for Media’s International Council Summit.

The proposed partnership could provide Skydance with billions in financial assistance while giving Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service a significant opportunity to expand into global entertainment distribution.

If Malone’s prediction proves accurate, the implications could extend far beyond another billionaire investing in a Hollywood studio.

John Malone Predicts a Massive Musk and Ellison Partnership

Malone, a longtime telecommunications and media executive who previously served as chairman of Warner Bros. Discovery, believes the longstanding financial relationship between Musk and Larry Ellison makes a partnership increasingly plausible.

“I think there’s a deal coming there,” Malone said, suggesting a potential investment worth between $8 billion and $10 billion.

His reasoning centers on the existing business connections between the two billionaires.

Larry Ellison helped finance Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter in 2022, while Tesla shares have also played a role in Ellison’s financing activities.

Malone believes those financial relationships could eventually produce an arrangement that benefits both SpaceX and Skydance.

“I predict, big prediction, that you’ll see a global output deal for Skydance with SpaceX, and an investment by SpaceX into Skydance, to deliver Skydance and take a little bit of the burden off David Ellison’s shoulders, because he’s taking on a pretty big pile of debt,” Malone explained, according to Investing.com.

Malone went even further, suggesting an announcement could arrive relatively soon.

However, neither Skydance nor SpaceX has publicly confirmed negotiations or announced such an agreement. Malone’s comments remain a prediction rather than evidence that a transaction has been finalized.

Skydance Faces an Enormous Financial Challenge

The timing of Malone’s prediction is particularly noteworthy.

Skydance completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on October 6, creating an entertainment conglomerate encompassing Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., CBS, CNN, HBO, and numerous other media properties.

While the acquisition dramatically expanded David Ellison’s influence in Hollywood, it also left the combined company facing substantial financial obligations.

According to Investing.com, the company is carrying nearly $87 billion in total debt, a figure that has contributed to investor concerns following the merger.

A multibillion-dollar investment from SpaceX could provide significant financial flexibility as Skydance attempts to integrate its enormous collection of entertainment assets.

It could also potentially reduce pressure for aggressive cost-cutting, asset sales, or other restructuring measures, depending on how any investment is structured.

That distinction matters for Hollywood employees, filmmakers, and consumers alike.

Major entertainment mergers frequently result in consolidation, layoffs, and changes to production strategies. Additional outside financing would not guarantee protection from those outcomes, but it could provide Ellison with more options as he attempts to stabilize the company.

Starlink Could Become a Major Entertainment Distribution Player

Perhaps the most intriguing aspect of Malone’s prediction involves Starlink.

SpaceX’s satellite internet service has already established itself as an alternative to traditional terrestrial broadband infrastructure, particularly in areas where conventional internet connections are limited or unavailable.

A global distribution arrangement involving Skydance could potentially create new opportunities to deliver entertainment programming through Starlink’s network.

For Skydance, that could mean access to another distribution relationship as the company competes against Netflix, Disney, Amazon, and other major streaming providers.

For Musk, it could represent another expansion of his growing influence across technology, communications, and media.

However, a distribution partnership would not automatically mean Starlink would acquire exclusive rights to Paramount or Warner Bros. programming, nor would it necessarily create a new streaming service.

Those details would depend entirely on the terms of any eventual agreement.

Nevertheless, the possibility of SpaceX becoming a significant partner to one of Hollywood’s largest entertainment companies raises fascinating questions about the future of traditional media distribution.

Hollywood’s Balance of Power Continues to Shift

Malone also raised concerns about the entertainment industry’s ability to compete with YouTube, which continues to challenge traditional television networks and streaming platforms for viewers’ attention.

According to TheWrap, Malone warned that YouTube is “running away with the gold ring when it comes to media.”

His comments highlight a fundamental problem facing Hollywood’s traditional business model.

Major studios are no longer competing exclusively against one another. They are increasingly competing against technology companies that control the platforms, infrastructure, and algorithms through which audiences discover entertainment.

A potential partnership between Skydance and SpaceX would represent another example of the growing intersection between Silicon Valley and Hollywood.

It could also give the Ellisons additional resources to challenge established entertainment companies at a time when the industry is undergoing significant restructuring.

For David Ellison, the immediate challenge remains turning his newly expanded company into a sustainable business while preserving the creative talent and intellectual properties that make its studios valuable.

For Musk, a substantial investment could offer another opportunity to expand his business empire into an industry where traditional corporate leadership has struggled to adapt to changing consumer habits.

And for Hollywood, the possibility of Musk becoming a major financial participant in the company controlling Paramount, Warner Bros., HBO, and CBS would undoubtedly represent another significant shift in an already rapidly changing entertainment landscape.

Whether Malone’s prediction becomes reality remains to be seen. But with billions of dollars potentially involved and two of the world’s most influential billionaires already connected through substantial business relationships, the possibility of a SpaceX-Skydance partnership is one Hollywood cannot afford to ignore.
