Beginning in late September 2025, EPCOT has been observed testing new crowd management methods in the pre-show areas of Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. The adjustments aim to improve guest flow between Lightning Lane (paid queue) and standby (regular queue) groups by reducing congestion and clarifying movement patterns.

The Current Pre-Show Configuration and Its Challenges

The existing operational setup merges both Lightning Lane and standby guests in a large first pre-show room.

After waiting there, guests move through a teleportation effect to a second pre-show room, and then proceed to the final boarding queue. This merged flow often creates bottlenecks and crowding near doors and walls. Cast members face difficulties maintaining orderly and safe movement due to guests rushing or jockeying for position.

New Procedure Tested

Recent reports indicate that several temporary modifications have been introduced during testing at the Guardians of the Galaxy pre-show areas. Rope barriers, or stanchions, have been installed to separate Lightning Lane guests on one side and standby guests on the other within the pre-show rooms.

Cast members actively guide guests toward their designated sides to maintain this separation. In some instances, doors to the next pre-show area open first for Lightning Lane guests, with standby guests entering separately afterward.

The second pre-show room has also sometimes been divided similarly, extending the separation up to the boarding area.

However, when crowds increase significantly, the park has occasionally reverted to the original, undivided queue system. These modifications have not been applied consistently throughout the day; in several cases, they appear during morning hours but are removed during busier periods.

Context and Rationale

The changes follow the February 2025 transition of Cosmic Rewind from a virtual queue (boarding group) system to a traditional standby queue. This shift increased the physical queue population, putting more pressure on pre-show areas. Disney has not officially confirmed the specific changes or their permanence.

While some suggest the new protocol reduces Lightning Lane advantages by enforcing stricter separation, others consider it a safety precaution.

Responses and Uncertainties

Because testing is ongoing, the final form of any changes remains unclear. Disney has not announced if the new system will become permanent or how it may evolve.

Critics question whether guest separation might increase perceived inequities or slow boarding during peak times. Supporters note potential improvements to crowd safety and control.

What Visitors May Experience Now

Guests at Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind might see cast members directing visitors to left or right sides based on their queue type. Rope barriers might partition the pre-show rooms, and Lightning Lane guests could be allowed to move first to the next room, followed shortly by standby guests. However, during busy periods, the attraction may operate with the previous, combined flow.

In summary, these pre-show changes are experimental and can vary throughout the day and by crowd level. How Disney will finalize these procedures remains to be seen.
