“It’s Tough to Be a Bug” and it’s about to be much tougher. Flick and all his pals are hopping out of the theater relatively soon and we have the exclusive details you just can’t miss if you’d like to know what’s on the horizon for Disney’s Animal Kingdom!
“It’s Tough to Be a Bug!” is a 3D film and multimedia attraction located at Disney’s Animal Kingdom park at the Walt Disney World Resort. Opened on April 22, 1998, the same day as the park itself, the attraction is hosted by Flik, an ant and the protagonist from Pixar’s film “A Bug’s Life”. This attraction holds a special place in the Disney parks as it not only showcases Disney’s innovative 3D technology and animatronics but also emphasizes ecological messages through entertainment.

The development of “It’s Tough to Be a Bug!” was a result of the collaboration between Disney and Pixar, intended to promote “A Bug’s Life”, which released in November 1998. The idea was to immerse guests in the world of the movie, experiencing life from a bug’s perspective. This attraction was designed to be educational, shedding light on the challenges bugs face through engaging and humorous presentations.
It’s Tough to Be a Bug!” is housed underneath the iconic Tree of Life, the centerpiece of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The Tree of Life stands 145 feet tall and features intricate carvings of various animals, symbolizing the diversity and beauty of nature. The theater inside accommodates approximately 430 guests per show, with the show running approximately minutes.
The attraction leverages 3D film technology combined with in-theater effects, such as smells, water sprays, and moving seats, to enhance the sensory experience. It features several “bug” characters, both from “A Bug’s Life” and new characters created specifically for the attraction, such as Chili, the tarantula.
However, soon all the bugs are bailing out. Zootopia is on the way.
According to our sources, the new Zootopia attraction will be based around the idea of an animal celebration in the Zootopia world called “Zoogether Day”. Humans (guests) will be invited to join along all the animals when some sort of catastrophe occurs that throws everything into flux. In place of the giant Hopper animatronic will be a master of ceremonies, Officer Clawhauser. This “larger-than-life” animatronic will be there all along the new adventure, geeking out because the grand finale is an appearance from Gazelle, once again played by Shakira. An all-new song is expected to be recorded by Shakira and, of course, Nick Wild and Judy Hopps will be there to dance along with guests.

That Park Place is told that guests should continue to expect all the same theater effects to return for the show. However, some of these effects may be “plussed” in their new incarnation.
Overall, all of this sounds like a very positive and welcomed change for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. In fact, I have to say that in a very unusual circumstance, I have literally nothing that I perceive as a negative about this change. Dear Disney, please don’t prove me wrong!
Please note that the above article is based on a future attraction, and therefore must be categorized at this time as rumor and speculation until the attraction makes its way Walt Disney World Resort.
