Ezra Miller is plotting a quiet return to Hollywood after nearly two years out of the public spotlight. The embattled actor made an unexpected appearance at the Cannes Film Festival last month, walking the red carpet in support of Die My Love, the new film from director Lynne Ramsay. Miller’s reemergence marks the first major public outing since a string of criminal charges and accusations that have severely damaged his reputation and career.

Miller confirmed in a recent interview with Italian outlet Lo Speciale Giornale that he is co-writing a new project with Ramsay, who previously directed him in We Need to Talk About Kevin.

“I came to Cannes to support one of my closest friends in the world, who is Lynne Ramsay—who I think is one of the greatest living filmmakers,” Miller said. “I’m working with her again, that will likely be the first thing I do, is a film that her and I are writing together.”

Ezra Miller then spoke about his supposed Hollywood return, calling the appearance a “tough re-entry point” into the industry.

“I’ve been writing a lot, because you can do that in solitude, which has been friendly to me,” he said. While Miller may be preparing for a creative revival, his legal history casts a long shadow over the comeback effort.

A Troubled Pattern

Since 2020, Miller has been at the center of multiple criminal investigations and public scandals, including the following incidents.

  • April 2020 – Iceland Choking Video: A viral video captured Miller choking a woman and forcing her to the ground outside a bar in Reykjavik. Although no charges were filed, the footage led to significant public backlash.
  • March 2022 – Arrest in Hawaii: Miller was arrested for disorderly conduct and harassment after a disturbance at a karaoke bar in Hilo. He was accused of shouting obscenities, grabbing a microphone from a woman singing, and lunging at a man playing darts.
  • March 2022 – Threats and Burglary: Just weeks later, a local couple filed for a restraining order after Miller allegedly entered their home, threatened them, and stole personal items including a passport and wallet. The order was later dropped.
  • April 2022 – Second Arrest in Hawaii: Miller was taken into custody again, this time for second-degree assault after reportedly throwing a chair that struck a woman in the forehead, resulting in a half-inch gash.
  • June 2022 – Harassment Allegations Involving a Minor: A mother and her 12-year-old child in Massachusetts obtained a temporary harassment prevention order against Miller. The family accused the actor of inappropriate behavior, including making the child uncomfortable and brandishing a gun. The order expired in 2023.
  • June 2022 – Grooming Accusations: The parents of Tokata Iron Eyes, a then-18-year-old activist, accused Miller of grooming their child over a period of several years. The family alleged that Miller began manipulating Tokata at age 12 through travel, gifts, and influence. The case sparked widespread controversy, though legal motions were ultimately withdrawn.
  • August 2022 – Felony Burglary Charge: Miller was charged in Vermont for breaking into a neighbor’s home and stealing several bottles of alcohol. He later pleaded guilty to misdemeanor trespassing and was sentenced to one year of probation with conditions including continued mental health treatment.

Miller Claims he was “Targeted”

In past interviews, Miller has claimed that many of the allegations were either exaggerated or false.

After the Massachusetts harassment order was lifted, Miller told Deadline: “I have been unjustly and directly targeted by an individual who the facts have shown has a history of such manipulative and destructive action.”

Miller also accused the complainant of seeking “tabloid fame” and “personal vengeance.”

He went on to state that the legal challenges had taught him “lessons” and expressed “remorse and lamentation for a lot of things I did and a lot of things that happened in that time.”

Industry Uncertainty

The attempted Hollywood return of Ezra Miller raises questions for studios and audiences alike. Though The Flash was released during the height of the controversy, Warner Bros. notably minimized Miller’s press appearances and faced internal backlash over their continued support of the actor.

The film grossly underperformed at the box office and was widely seen as a troubled project from inception to release.

Now, with a writing credit on the horizon and the backing of an acclaimed director, Miller appears poised to resume his creative career. However, the list of unresolved public concerns remains long, and public sentiment continues to be divided—if not outright critical.

Whether Hollywood is ready to embrace an Ezra Miller return, or if audiences will accept such a thing, is a question that only time can answer.
