The family of a 70-year-old woman who died after riding the Revenge of the Mummy roller coaster at Universal Studios Florida has retained civil rights attorney Ben Crump to represent them as they seek answers about the circumstances surrounding her death.

The Incident

Ma de La Luz Mejia Rosas became unresponsive while riding Revenge of the Mummy, an indoor dark coaster at Universal Studios Florida, on November 25, 2025, according to a quarterly injury report issued by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. She was taken to a local hospital and died on December 9, 2025.

A report from the Orange County Medical Examiner determined that Rosas died from a ruptured aneurysm without trauma, indicating that there was no evidence of blunt force or physical injury linked to the ride itself. The medical examiner’s findings were publicly released in January 2026.

An office representing Rosas’s family said they hired Crump to pursue transparency about what happened before, during, and after the ride. They are seeking information on the ride’s operations, safety protocols, maintenance history, and other incident data that could illuminate the sequence of events.

Universal Orlando Resort has not issued a detailed statement about Rosas’s death beyond routine safety reporting requirements. A spokesperson for Universal declined to comment when asked about ongoing legal inquiries.

Background on the Ride

Revenge of the Mummy opened at Universal Studios Florida in 2004 and has consistently been described in safety guides as a high-speed indoor roller coaster with rapid acceleration, sudden stops, and special effects. It has a max speed of 40 mph, with three launches. Guests with certain medical conditions, including heart issues, high blood pressure, or sensitivity to motion or strobe effects, are advised not to ride.

Under Florida law, major theme parks like Universal must report serious injuries and deaths to the state, but they are exempt from regular external safety inspections and instead rely on self-reported incident data and internal maintenance testing.

The decision to retain Crump follows public attention to another fatal incident involving Universal Orlando. In September 2025, Kevin Rodriguez Zavala, 32, died after riding the Stardust Racers coaster at Universal’s Epic Universe. Crump also represented Zavala’s family. Their matter was resolved through an agreement reached with Universal, the terms of which were not publicly disclosed.

Crump is widely known for representing families in high-profile civil rights and wrongful death cases. His involvement signals the family’s intention to pursue a thorough review of available information surrounding Rosas’s death, although no formal lawsuit had been publicly filed as of late January 2026.

Rosas was at the park with her children and grandchildren on the day of the ride, according to attorney statements. Her relatives say they hope gaining access to additional records and testimony will clarify any unanswered questions and contribute to broader public understanding of theme park safety practices.
