Fans Can Stick It to the Critics by Watching Sonic 2

Critics really hate Sonic the Hedgehog. They hated that director Jeff Fowler listened to the fans and changed course at their behest. Fans shouldn’t have that opportunity. They hate that Sonic the Hedgehog beat Birds of Prey despite their attempts to promote one and dismiss the other. Audiences turned way from one and embraced the other. That means that critics just don’t matter so much in determining who is going to see a film. Now they’re grasping at straws as they do everything in their power to take their anger out on the sequel. Imagine that you are so narcissistic that you have to lash out at a kids’ film with a CGI blue hedgehog in order to try to salvage your ego. Congratulations, you now know what it means to be a film critic in the modern era.

Too bad it is in service to one more story of a scrappy young male hero on a search for powerful talismans in order to defeat increasingly more formidable villains. — Tim Grierson, Screen Daily

That’s right, folks… Sonic is a bad movie for kids because Sonic is… male.

I couldn’t believe that the first time I read it on a TPP Article. But it’s not just that crazy article, there are plenty of other articles which are just as nuts. It’s so bad that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is down at a 44 on the Metacritic Critic Score. There’s just one problem for these critics with their issues like Sonic being male: they already tried this once with the first film… and they couldn’t stop it.

Yes, I know that neither the first Sonic movie and the sequel are flawed family films. They’re still good, but they’re not perfect. We’re talking about movies about talking, anthropomorphic hedgehogs, foxes, and echidnas. But if you really want to stick it to the critics, this one of those rare movies where just by going to the theater, you can actually anger the critics that wish you wouldn’t. I’m not here to create a campaign or tell you to see a movie you don’t want to go… but if you’re one of those individuals who really can’t stand what is going on with sociopolitical issues driving falsely harsh movie reviews, there’s no better movie to go see this year to fight against that. I have heard form enough people who have seen the movie to know that it’s a fine little film that has timeless morals. Add that to the reasons they really don’t like it.

We’ll have a review up for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on Thursday evening. But I’ll definitely be going to see this film if for no other reason than to show that I could care less what snarky movie critics say I should choose for my popcorn parade. If it’s decent, I might just go again. If we are ever going to let Hollywood know that listening to fans matters, this is the sort of thing that we have to support. Will it be the best movie ever? No… it’s going to be a slightly disjointed kids’ superhero CGI flick with a fun little message. And I for one support that.
