The long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake may finally be on the verge of becoming reality—at least, that’s what hopeful fans are thinking after Square Enix quietly launched an official 25th anniversary website for the beloved PlayStation classic.
Published entirely in Japanese, the new website commemorates the original release of Final Fantasy 9 on July 7, 2000. The site includes a brief but intriguing message: “We are preparing various projects, including merchandise and collaborations to commemorate the 25th anniversary, so please look forward to it!”

While on the surface that statement seems fairly standard for an anniversary campaign, fans immediately latched onto the phrase “various projects” as a potential signal that Square Enix is gearing up to reveal the long-speculated remake. After all, this is a company known for vague teases, strategic timing, and fan-driven marketing momentum.
Adding fuel to the fire is the timing of the website’s launch, which comes just days before Nintendo’s expected April 2 Direct—an event widely believed to focus on the next-generation Switch 2. The coincidence hasn’t gone unnoticed. With Final Fantasy 9’s stylized visuals and nostalgic tone, it’s seen as a perfect fit for Nintendo’s hardware and audience. Naturally, speculation is running wild that the remake could make its debut at that very event.
Still, it’s worth noting that nothing about a remake is confirmed. The 25th anniversary website doesn’t mention new game development, only commemorative content like merch and tie-ins. But it’s that one tantalizing phrase—“various projects”—that’s keeping hope alive.

Fans will also recall that this isn’t the first time a Final Fantasy 9 remake has been hinted at. Back in 2021, a massive Nvidia GeForce Now database leak included several unannounced Square Enix projects. While some of those games, like Kingdom Hearts 4, Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake for PC, have since come to fruition, others—including Final Fantasy 9 Remake and Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster—have yet to surface.
Meanwhile, Square Enix itself has been leaning into FF9 nostalgia in other ways. Earlier this year, Final Fantasy 14 producer Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida announced FF9-themed content for the Dawntrail expansion. These include an Ark summon mount, a wind-up Garnet minion, and a pre-order bonus Zidane minion.
During the reveal at PAX East, Yoshi-P cheekily addressed the barrage of FF9 references, saying, “You may have noticed a lot of Final Fantasy 9 references here, but the reason is a secret,” before zipping his lips shut on stage.

Yoshida has previously commented on the challenges of remaking Final Fantasy 9, particularly when it comes to condensing the game’s scale and story.
“It’s a game with huge volume,” he said in an interview. “I wonder if it’s possible to remake that as a single title.” That naturally led fans to draw comparisons to Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which is unfolding as a trilogy. Could Square Enix be considering a similar multi-part treatment for Final Fantasy 9?

With the 25th anniversary in full swing and mounting signs that something big is on the horizon, fans are more optimistic than ever. Whether it’s a full-blown remake, a remaster, or simply some celebratory swag, one thing is certain: Final Fantasy 9 is finally back in the spotlight.
Now the only question is—will Square Enix actually deliver?

Even if it is a thing I wouldn’t touch it. Square and their Ethics Department will surely censor it.
Besides the Nvidia-Leak it was also leaked by the EpicDB leak in 2023. And also Jeff Grubb confirmed live on stream.
Also there is an FF9 animation show in the work (current status is questionable though since Cyber Group Studios has financial issues).
And also there were serveral FF9 events in FF14 and FF7 ever crisis in recent time.
Looks to me like there is a lo FF9 stuff going on the background which probably is suppose to merge into a FF9 Remake marketing phase.
Please no FF 9 remake. The original is prefect as it is. Anything SE does will only make it worse. And the worst thing would be of they add some identity politics to it.
