The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in theaters in less than a month. To celebrate Mario Day—MAR10—the final trailer was revealed in a special Nintendo Direct video. The video also included several major casting announcements, including that Donald Glover will be the voice of Yoshi.

With new footage and confirmation of both returning and new characters, excitement for the sequel appears to be growing.

The Final Trailer Reveals a Galaxy-Spanning Adventure

Based on the new trailer, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be a cosmic adventure. A common criticism of the first Mario movie was that the plumber brothers were separated and that it was too much of a princess story. Nintendo and Illumination seem to have listened. In a short introduction, Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, who voice the Mario Bros., revealed that Mario and Luigi will be “side by side for the whole adventure.”

The trailer opens with Bowser Jr. lifting Princess Peach’s castle into space and demanding the release of his father. Mario puts up his fists and replies, “Over my dead body.” However, it appears that Bowser Jr. came prepared for a fight. This sets off the rest of the action-heavy adventure. Peach’s castle comes crashing to the ground, and Bowser is shown leading his army.

After some initial panic from the Toads, Mario tells everyone to calm down. Peach commands Toad to pack their things. Soon the Mario Bros., Peach, Toad, Yoshi, and their new allies are off on their galaxy-spanning quest to save the cosmos. Fans will have to wait to hear Glover as Yoshi, as the Nintendo Direct video saved the announcement until after the trailer.

So far, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie trailer seems to give fans what they expect in a sequel. It builds out the world, expands the cast, and raises the stakes.

Miyamoto and the Cast Tease New Characters

Following the trailer, Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto thanked the fans and the cast. He also teased that many nostalgic characters will make an appearance, encouraging fans to head to the theater and see how many they can spot. Additionally, he said that the film will be the centerpiece of The Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary celebration.

The video then cuts to Jack Black and Benny Safdie celebrating the vast scope and visuals of the movie. Special attention is also given to the character arcs of villains. Bowser Jr. is described as “a kid trying to prove himself, trying to find his dad, and live up to something bigger than him.”

Brie Larson, who plays a new princess, Rosalina, in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is introduced by returning stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Keegan-Michael Key. They noted that princesses bring “strength, heart, and emotion” to the stories in the Mario universe. Larson went on to express her fandom of the movies and Mario games.

Finally, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri comes on to introduce voice actors who will play new characters in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Luis Guzmán will play Wart, a villain from Super Mario Bros. 2. One of Mario’s new allies, the Honey Queen, will be voiced by Issa Rae. After a small build-up, Meledandri announced that “Nintendo super fan” Donald Glover will be voicing Yoshi.

A Bigger Sequel for Mario’s 40th Anniversary

With the final trailer now released, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie appears ready to build on the success of its predecessor by expanding the scope of the Mario universe. The combination of nostalgic characters, new worlds, and star-studded casting is likely to draw strong interest from both gamers and general audiences.
