Disneyland Resort’s Avengers Campus expansion has officially taken its first step forward with construction of the addition of the first steel column at Disney California Adventure. This marks a significant development in the park’s expansion project, which was first announced nearly three years ago. The column’s placement is a key milestone for the upcoming attractions and changes planned for the area, signaling the beginning of the physical construction phase.

An Instagram post from Walt Disney Imagineering announced the milestone with pictures of the construction site. Pictures showed the cleared construction site, vertical steel columns, a tall crane, and construction workers smiling at the camera.

“Equipping more guests to become Super Heroes requires equipment,” it read. “The expansion of Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure Park went vertical this morning with the first steel column lifted into place. New, thrilling attractions will join the campus, doubling its size in the future.

Background on the Expansion

The announcement of the Avengers Campus expansion was made in 2022 at D23 as part of a broader plan to enhance the park’s Marvel-themed area. Disney revealed plans to add two new rides, Avengers: Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab. The rides will complement existing attractions in the Avengers Campus, including the popular WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure.

While the all the details have not been officially released, the steel column’s installation indicates that significant progress is finally being made. The expansion will be located adjacent to the current Avengers Campus, which opened in 2021. The new addition is expected to incorporate more Marvel characters and stories, further building out the area as a focal point for Disney California Adventure’s superhero-themed offerings.

Construction Timeline

The announcement of the expansion was met with excitement from Disney fans, but the construction process has faced delays. Initially, construction was expected to move forward shortly after the project was announced. However, a combination of factors, including supply chain issues and the complexity of the ride’s design, delayed progress for several years.

The placement of the first steel column, while a crucial step, is just the beginning of a lengthy construction process. Disney has not provided a specific completion date for the project, but the addition of this first piece of infrastructure suggests that the bulk of the construction will likely take place over the next 18-24 months. As the project progresses, more details about the new ride and other planned elements of the expansion are expected to be released.

Details of the New Rides

While details about the upcoming ride remain limited, reports have speculated that it will be a multi-sensory, immersive experience that uses cutting-edge technology. The storyline for the attraction centers around a myriad of Marvel characters from across the multiverse joining forces to defeat King Thanos. Guests will world-jump from New York City to Wakand to Asgard, as their favorite superheroes.

At Stark Flight Lab, guests will visit Tony Stark’s flight simulator as gyrokinetic test pods malfunction, taking guests on from track to roboticarm and back.

The steel column represents just one part of the infrastructure necessary for the ride. In the coming months, more steel elements and framework will be installed, followed by more detailed work on themed elements and ride systems. The ride is expected to be one of the centerpieces of the Avengers Campus expansion.

Impact on the Park and Visitors

The expansion of Avengers Campus is expected to enhance the overall guest experience at Disney California Adventure. With the addition of new attractions, it will provide visitors with more options and help distribute crowds more evenly across the park.

The new ride and additional immersive experiences could also increase the park’s appeal to both Marvel fans and general visitors.

Conclusion

While the first steel column marks a significant step in the construction of the Avengers Campus expansion, much work remains. Disney has not yet revealed an official opening timeline for the new ride, but the installation of the first structural element suggests that progress is now underway.
