The long-gestating Gears of War movie adaptation has officially found its director. Fortunately, it’s someone who knows his way around bullets, brawls, and big-budget mayhem.

The Gears Begin to Turn

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has tapped The Fall Guy director David Leitch to helm the live-action film based on the iconic Xbox video game franchise. Leitch, known for his stylish, stunt-driven action fare like Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde, and Deadpool 2, is currently in negotiations for the project. He’ll also produce alongside his 87North producing partner Kelly McCormick, who’s also his wife, with the film co-produced by game developer The Coalition.

The script is being penned by Jon Spaihts, whose recent credits include co-writing Dune and its sequel alongside Denis Villeneuve. That collaboration may hint at the kind of world-building ambitions Netflix has in mind for this grim and gritty sci-fi shooter adaptation—dense lore, post-apocalyptic stakes, and a world crumbling under both physical and moral rot.

What Is Gears of War, Anyway?

First released in 2006, Gears of War became one of Xbox’s flagship franchises thanks to its brutal third-person combat, chainsaw bayonets, and heavy metal aesthetic. It helped define a generation of cover-based shooters and launched multiple sequels, novels, and comics.

The story follows a squad of hardened soldiers battling against the monstrous underground Locust Horde on the war-torn planet Sera. At the center is Marcus Fenix, a disgraced former soldier leading what may be humanity’s final stand.

Netflix first acquired the rights in late 2022 with plans for a multi-pronged rollout: a live-action film followed by an adult animated series, and potentially more if the adaptation hits its mark.

But that’s a big if.

Netflix and the Adaptation Curse

While the talent attached is promising, Netflix doesn’t exactly have a flawless track record when it comes to live-action adaptations. This is especially true when adapting beloved source material with passionate fanbases and deep lore. Projects like Cowboy Bebop and Resident Evil—and Yu Yu Hakusho, which nobody remembers—left fans cold, raising understandable skepticism about how faithfully and effectively the streamer can bring complex gaming worlds to life.

Video game adaptations in general have always been a gamble, regardless of platform. For every Sonic the Hedgehog or Arcane, there are plenty of half-baked attempts that missed the tone, characters, or visual style entirely. Gears of War is a franchise that thrives on grim brutality, tragic heroism, and a very specific post-military vibe. Translating that without reducing it to a generic alien shoot-’em-up will be no small feat.

Leitch Brings Firepower—but Is It Enough?

Leitch’s involvement does help its odds. A former stuntman turned director, he’s carved a niche delivering high-impact, visually inventive action. While his tone can vary—from the slick nihilism of Atomic Blonde to the popcorn absurdity of Hobbs & Shaw—he consistently brings a polished, visceral edge that could suit Gears’ brutal tone well. If he and Spaihts can capture the franchise’s bleak intensity without diluting its grit, the adaptation might just buck the trend.

Still, for now, it’s cautious optimism. No casting has been announced yet, and Netflix has declined to comment on the dealmaking. Until there’s footage—or at least more details—fans should to remain wary. And given Gears’ devoted following and distinctive style, this is one adaptation that can’t afford to miss the mark.
