New information has surfaced regarding the passing of Hollywood legend Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, who were found dead in their Santa Fe, New Mexico, home on Wednesday. According to Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza, deputies conducted a wellness check at the residence, where they found Hackman, 95, in a mudroom near the kitchen and Arakawa, 64, in a bathroom next to a space heater. A prescription bottle with pills scattered on the counter was also located near Arakawa. Their dog was found deceased in a kennel. Arakawa’s body was reportedly in a state of decomposition with bloating in her face and signs of mummification in her hands and feet.

Sheriff Mendoza confirmed that after their initial search, authorities applied for a warrant to conduct a more thorough investigation. The New Mexico Gas Company and the local fire department were brought in to inspect for possible toxic fumes or gas leaks, but no issues were detected. Their findings ruled out carbon monoxide exposure as a factor in the couple’s passing.

Authorities Investigating Time and Circumstances of Passing

The search warrant classified the situation as “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation,” though law enforcement has not indicated any signs of forced entry or visible external injuries on either Hackman or Arakawa.

Two maintenance workers reportedly noticed the front door ajar, prompting them to check inside. They were the first to find the couple before alerting authorities. Inside the home, two other dogs were found alive—one in the bathroom with Arakawa and another outside the home.
