Gino, a well-known western lowland gorilla and one of the original residents of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, died on September 17, 2025 at 44 years old. One of Animal Kingdom’s head veterinarians confirmed his death in a public statement shared on social media.

“We are heartbroken to share the passing of Gino, our beloved 44-year-old western lowland gorilla. For nearly 30 years, Gino touched countless lives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with his playful spirit, gentle humor, and steady presence as a devoted father and troop leader.

-Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President of Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment

Longtime Resident of Animal Kingdom

Gino was born in 1980 and arrived at Disney’s Animal Kingdom when the park opened in 1998. For over 27 years, he lived on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail in the park’s Africa section.

He was the oldest gorilla at the park and one of the oldest western lowland gorillas in human care in North America.

Contributions to Conservation and Care

Gino was known for his participation in voluntary medical behaviors, including cardiac ultrasounds. According to Disney’s animal care team, he was trained to participate in these procedures fully awake, which improved both his health outcomes and research on gorilla cardiac care.

His cooperative medical behavior helped inform care strategies for other gorillas in zoological settings. Gino’s longevity and training were often highlighted by conservationists and animal welfare professionals as an example of long-term health management in primates under human care.

Family and Social Structure

Over the course of his life, Gino fathered 14 offspring. Some of his descendants live at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, although their names and locations were not all disclosed publicly. Gino led his troop for years and was described by staff as a steady and influential presence among the gorilla group.

Staff members observed that he took an active role in social interactions and maintained close bonds with his troop members. Although not aggressive, Gino was respected by younger gorillas and was viewed as a natural leader within the troop hierarchy.

44th Birthday and Public Interaction

In 2024, Disney’s animal care team hosted a birthday celebration for Gino, 80s-themed in recognition of his birth year.

His enrichment items included cassette tapes and vinyl records from that era. Guests visiting the park were invited to learn more about western lowland gorillas and the threats they face in the wild.

Reaction to His Passing

Gino’s death was met with public tributes from guests and staff. Many expressed appreciation for the role he played in education and conservation outreach.

The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed. Disney stated that he passed shortly before his 45th birthday, which would have occurred in December 2025. The average life expectancy of a male western lowland gorilla is about 35 to 40 years in the wild. In captivity they have been known to live longer, exceeding 50 years in some rare cases.

Species Status and Legacy

Western lowland gorillas are listed as critically endangered due to habitat loss, poaching, and disease. Conservation breeding programs in accredited zoos aim to maintain genetic diversity and educate the public about these primates.
