God of War director David Jaffe attempted to set the record straight after his rant against YouTube personality Vara Dark was labeled sexist.
According to Jaffe, his meltdown in which he stated that the popular YouTuber with 140 thousand subscribers only has her platform because of her gender and looks wasn’t sexist in the least.
Because… well… because he said so!
“I said some mean things about her,” he admitted. “They were not misogynistic, but they were mean. They were intentionally mean, but whatever.”
To fact check that statement, let’s check in with the David Jaffe from a few days ago.
“You are in that chair, Vara, because of your hair, and your face, and your gender,” Jaffe said in the rant that he claims was not misogynistic. “And that’s fine by the way. There’s no problem with that. But let’s be clear, you’re a mental lightweight.”
You can dislike me because of what I said about Vara Dark (from my 2 encounters w/her content attacking me, I sense her large audience is based on her being an attractive woman) but that is not misogyny. Lots of women (and men) are talented and ugly, pretty and useless, and…

Jaffe went on to explain himself, noting that what he said wasn’t sexist because he…apparently asked some women if it was.
“I was not sexist to Vera. Stop the clowns,” he said, defending himself. “I was not. I was mean to her. Trust me, because I was worried. Because I knew people would think I was. But I was like, I know people will think this is sexist or misogynistic.”
To review, Jaffe said what he said knowing that it would be considered sexist or misogynistic. However, he still said it, and explained why.
“But it’s really not, and I was checking with women,” he continued. “I’m like, ‘hey watch this for me,’ because maybe I’m wrong. Because I can be wrong. Everybody’s got a blind spot. I would hate to think I actually would say something sexist or misogynistic. But in this case I was like I don’t think it is. But again, I could still be wrong. Educate me if I am.”

When one of his live streamers pushed back stating that saying a woman only has their position because of her hair and looks is, in fact, misogyny, Jaffe took a moment to offer his definition of those terms.
“That’s not sexist,” he said. “That’s not misogynistic. That’s me being mean to her and saying the only thing, in my opinion, based on what I’ve seen of hers, that allows her to be able to do what she does is she is an attractive, or semi-attractive woman talking to a bunch of nerds. Is it mean? Oh, yeah! Is it cruel? Of course! I mean she was similarly in both of her previous clips the same to me. And yes it dealt with her being a woman, but that that wasn’t me talking about women and, like, oh, women can only do this job if, or I don’t like or trust women. No one can look at my channel and suggest that that’s my history or that’s the way I feel.”
(Did you follow that? Me neither…)

Vara Dark Responds in epic fashion to God of War creator David Jaffe’s wild tirade about her – YouTube, Vara Dark
Despite Jaffe’s narrative, in Dark’s first rebuke of Jaffe’s narrative surrounding Dragon Age: The Veilguard, she didn’t take any personal shots at him or belittle his work. She simply pushed back against his narrative that YouTube “grifters” caused the failure of Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
The worst she did was refer to him as being “salty.”
He then went on to say that he’ll metaphorically hit a woman all day long but would only physically strike a woman if she was bigger than him and attacking him.
Yes, that’s a real thing he said in his “I’m not sexist and misogynistic” explanation.

Jaffe then doubled down on his initial statement, noting that Dark’s audience is a bunch of “angry men” who enjoy seeing an attractive woman on their screen.
“She goes to a lot of angry men who feel like victims and feel like they’re not being heard,” he said. “And she happens
to be really attractive. Or, I, you know what, I’m not going to say, I’m not, she’s an attractive woman. I like redheads. She’s attractive. She’s young enough to be my kid. I don’t want to date her. I’m not being creepy. But I can look at someone objectively and go that’s an attractive woman. And, you know, sorry, but that’s not sexist. It’s not misogynistic.”
The above statement is about as “not creepy” as his initial comment was “not sexist.”
