Grand Theft Auto VI Will be Most “Mature” Entry in Series

Anyone worried that Rockstar Games planned to turn Grand Theft Auto VI into a sanitized version of the famously offensive franchise may be able to put at least some of those concerns to rest. In fact, new reports suggest the game may push beyond the comfort level of even some longtime fans.

Details from the game’s European age rating indicate that GTA VI will contain exceptionally graphic violence, drug use, sexual content, and other adult material when it finally reaches players.

According to GamesRadar, the Pan European Game Information board has given Grand Theft Auto VI a PEGI 18 rating. That’s hardly surprising for a franchise built around crime, violence, and adult humor. However, the specific content described by the ratings board suggests Rockstar is pushing some elements further than before.

Notably, PEGI may have revealed a little too much. The listing has since disappeared from the organization’s official website, raising the possibility that some of the information was published earlier than intended.

The rating reportedly warns of “detailed decapitation” and realistic dismemberment, while domestic animals can also be harmed. Drug use will apparently be similarly explicit, with players able to consume cocaine directly from their hands.

The game also contains strong sexual content, including references to sexual fetishes and interactive scenes inside adult entertainment establishments.

None of that is exactly family-friendly, but nobody expects Grand Theft Auto to be.

More significantly, the rating suggests Rockstar has not stripped the franchise of the deliberately excessive adult content that helped establish its reputation.

Fans Were Worried GTA VI Would Be Sanitized

Those concerns date back several years.

In 2022, Bloomberg reported that Rockstar had undergone significant cultural changes internally and was attempting to become a “kinder, gentler company.” The report suggested those changes would also affect Grand Theft Auto VI, which could feel substantially different from its predecessor.

As Geeks + Gamers reported at the time, some longtime players worried that increased sensitivity could undermine a franchise whose identity has traditionally depended upon mocking virtually everyone.

Those concerns were understandable. The world in which GTA VI was developed is remarkably different from the one Rockstar inhabited when development reportedly began around 2014.

American culture has changed considerably over the past decade, particularly when it comes to the boundaries of acceptable comedy and satire.

For Grand Theft Auto, that presents an unusual problem. The franchise has never merely been violent. Its identity is built around holding an exaggerated mirror up to American culture and finding something ridiculous about practically everyone reflected in it.

Mature Content Doesn’t Necessarily Answer the Bigger Question

The new PEGI information provides strong evidence that Rockstar hasn’t sanitized GTA VI when it comes to violence, drugs, sex, or other adult material.

Whether the developer has changed its approach to satire is a different matter.

There are indications that Rockstar still intends to heavily parody contemporary America.

Speaking with LOVE Magazine, Rockstar Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries explained that simply recreating the modern world wouldn’t be enough.

“If you are going to put all this effort into creating a version of today’s world, it has to be more over the top, more insane, more in your face,” Humphries said. “Otherwise, you could just go outside and live in the real world.”

Humphries also said Rockstar is focused on making its world “satirical, larger than life, and more grotesque.”

How Far Will GTA VI’s Satire Go?

Those comments suggest that satire remains an important part of Rockstar’s approach. However, they don’t reveal whether the studio has become more selective about the people, institutions, or cultural trends it is willing to target.

The ratings-board description can’t answer that question either.

What it does establish is that Grand Theft Auto VI remains firmly aimed at adult audiences, with some content apparently going further than previous entries.

Ultimately, the extent to which Rockstar’s changing corporate culture has influenced the franchise’s trademark satire won’t become clear until players experience the game for themselves on November 19.
