Guy Gardner Will Have an Updated Haircut in ‘Man of Tomorrow’

Guy Gardner will receive a slightly updated look when he returns to the big screen in Man of Tomorrow.

Nathan Fillion has revealed that the Green Lantern’s famously unflattering bowl cut will undergo some modifications for James Gunn’s upcoming Superman follow-up. However, fans should not expect Gardner to suddenly adopt a fashionable hairstyle.

“We updated the hairdo just a little bit,” Fillion told Entertainment Weekly.

The actor did not explain exactly how the hairstyle has changed. His careful wording suggests that Gardner will retain some version of his signature bowl cut rather than abandon it entirely.

Fans Question DC Studios’ Priorities

Many social media users were quick to point out the relative insignificance of the change. Marvel set new records this year with Spider-Man: Brand New Day, while Avengers: Doomsday is positioned to become another massive hit. The studio is also preparing to reboot the X-Men.

“So Spider Man will feature a battle with the Hulk, and Secret Wars will feature XMen vs Spider Man and his associated enemies. While Man of Tomorrow will feature Guy Gardner’s new haircut,” one user posted on X.

Meanwhile, DC Studios has struggled to establish itself as a compelling alternative comic-book universe. This summer’s Supergirl was a disaster, both at the box office and among moviegoers. Its immediate follow-up, the HBO Max series Lanterns, is proving similarly divisive.

Others noted that the latest news surrounding the new Superman movie is not about Superman himself. One major criticism of the first film was that it felt more like a team-up story than a movie focused on its supposedly central character.

“We are getting more updates on everyone but Superman himself,” another user wrote. “Is this Superman’s movie or another justice gang movie with Lois that have to come and save him?”

The concern raises the question of whether Gunn, who found superhero success with Guardians of the Galaxy, can—or even wants to—break from his established formula with Man of Tomorrow.

Fillion Fought for the Bowl Cut

The modification is notable because Fillion previously fought to preserve the character’s ridiculous hairstyle in Superman. Although members of the production initially wanted to give Gardner a more flattering appearance, Fillion believed the bowl cut was essential to capturing his personality.

The look carried through the production of Superman and the first season of Lanterns, which were filmed relatively close together. A newly designed wig for Man of Tomorrow could therefore reflect the passage of time—or simply give the filmmakers another opportunity to refine the character’s comic-book appearance.

Fillion has quickly become one of the most frequently recurring performers in the new DC Universe. He debuted as Gardner in Superman before making a brief appearance in the second season of Peacemaker. He currently plays the character in HBO’s Lanterns and will voice him in the upcoming animated adaptation of Mister Miracle.

“I don’t know if I’m an anchor being,” Fillion said when asked about his increasingly prominent place in the franchise. “I do think I am a thread being.”

Guy Gardner Returns in Man of Tomorrow

Gardner’s role in Man of Tomorrow remains unclear. The film will reunite David Corenswet’s Superman and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor, who must work together to confront a significantly greater threat.

Gunn has described the project as being as much a Lex Luthor movie as a Superman movie. The returning supporting cast will include several familiar characters from across the interconnected DC Universe, with Gardner once again helping tie its different corners together.

Man of Tomorrow will arrive in theaters on July 9, 2027. Audiences must wait until then to discover whether Gardner’s updated haircut is a genuine improvement—or merely a slightly different kind of disaster.
