Halo: Campaign Evolved’s LGBTQ+ Steam Tag Vanishes Less Than 24 Hours After Appearing on Store Page

Less than 24 hours after Halo: Campaign Evolved sparked discussion for being labeled an LGBTQ+ game on Steam, the controversial user-defined tag has disappeared entirely.

When players first noticed the designation shortly after the game’s launch, LGBTQ+ was displayed as the game’s most prominent user-defined tag alongside descriptors such as FPS, Action, Co-op, Singleplayer, and Shooter.

Now, however, the tag is nowhere to be found.

The sudden change raises new questions about what happened—and whether Valve, the Halo community, or Halo Studios itself played any role in its removal.

The LGBTQ+ Tag Has Disappeared

Yesterday, the Steam storefront prominently listed LGBTQ+ as one of the game’s most visible user-defined tags.

Today, that is no longer the case.

Even more notably, opening Steam’s “View and edit tags for this product” window—which displays the complete list of current user-defined tags associated with the game—shows that LGBTQ+ is no longer present anywhere.

The change appears to have occurred in less than a day.

What Could Have Happened?

Valve’s Steam tagging system is community-driven, allowing users to apply tags that they believe best describe a game. Developers also have access to Steamworks tools that allow them to remove tags they consider inaccurate.

Exactly what happened here remains unclear.

One possibility is that Steam’s community-driven weighting system simply elevated other tags over LGBTQ+. However, that explanation appears unlikely in this case. Less than 24 hours earlier, LGBTQ+ was the game’s most prominent user-defined tag, and it has now disappeared not only from the storefront but from Steam’s complete list of user-defined tags.

Valve also permits developers to remove tags they believe misrepresent their games. However, that explanation raises questions of its own. Halo Studios has consistently and publicly supported LGBTQ+ initiatives over the years, including Pride-themed community celebrations and messaging.

Given that public history, it would be somewhat unexpected for the studio to seek removal of an LGBTQ+ tag from one of its own games. At the same time, there is no public evidence indicating Halo Studios took any action regarding this specific tag.

Another, perhaps more likely, possibility is that enough users reported the tag as inaccurate for it to be removed.

As of publication, neither Valve nor Halo Studios has publicly commented on the change.

The Story Has Become the Disappearance

When the LGBTQ+ tag first appeared, the discussion centered on why a remake of Halo: Combat Evolved had received the designation despite no obvious LGBTQ-focused characters or storylines.

Now the conversation has shifted.

The tag that briefly became one of the most prominent labels on the game’s Steam page has vanished entirely, and there has been no public explanation as to why.

Without comment from Valve or Halo Studios, it’s impossible to determine whether the change resulted from community moderation, developer action, or another aspect of Steam’s tagging system. What can be said with certainty is that the LGBTQ+ tag was prominently displayed on Halo: Campaign Evolved’s Steam page one day—and by the next, it was gone.
