Props from the HBO Harry Potter series have gone missing. And producers have added microchips and several warnings to dissuade further disappearances.

According to British media reports, production staff discovered that several items had disappeared during the filming of a Halloween feast sequence set in the Hogwarts Great Hall. Items reported missing included broomsticks, magic wands, pumpkins, spell books, and artificial food props used in the scene.

The initial report came from The Sun, which cited unnamed production sources familiar with the situation. This source commented saying, “It’s easy to suspect the dozens of support actors on set, but truthfully no one knows who is responsible.”

Following the discovery of thing items, production reportedly introduced tighter security measures across the set. Some props have been fitted with tracking microchips so crew members can monitor their movement.

Warnings Appear on Set

Warning notices have also reportedly been placed around the studio complex. These notices inform cast and crew that props have been microchipped.

“For inventory and security purposes props are being tracked daily and movement of props will be logged,” appears under a broomstick with microchip in one poster.

Producers warned staff that theft of production items could lead to dismissal from the series. In addition, production teams have reportedly monitored eBay in case stolen items appear for sale.

Cast have also been instructed to promptly report any missing items.

HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery have not publicly commented on the reports.

Production Security Measures Are Common in Large Studio Projects

Large-scale productions often enforce strict controls over costumes and props. This is especially common in franchise adaptations where items are custom-built and difficult to replace quickly.

Security concerns have also appeared earlier in the production cycle. Reports previously claimed that aerial imagery of outdoor sets appeared online through mapping services. These images reportedly showed large set builds connected to locations from the “Harry Potter” universe, including Diagon Alley and Privet Drive.

The production has also reportedly implemented confidentiality rules during filming. Earlier reports suggested restrictions on mobile phone use in certain filming zones to reduce the risk of leaks.

HBO Series Continues Production in the United Kingdom

HBO announced the “Harry Potter” television adaptation in 2023. The series is planned as a long-form adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s seven books, with each season expected to cover key portions of the novels.

Filming for the first season is underway at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the same location used for the original film series.

The announced cast includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. John Lithgow will play Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer will portray Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu will appear as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost will play Rubeus Hagrid.

The series is set to premiere Christmas Day, December 25, 2026.

Conclusion

As production continues, tighter security seeks to prevent further thefts. With a franchise as beloved and popular as Harry Potter, props from as-of-yet-unreleased series still have quite the potential price tag and sentimental value attached.
