HBO Max dropped a surprise It: Welcome to Derry episode for Halloween, a never-before-seen special titled A Story of Derry that traces the ancient spirit’s origins long before Pennywise ruled the town.

Deadline relayed HBO Max’s Instagram pitch: “IT’s a surprise Halloween treat” paired with a short clip of the episode. The logline sends three youngsters into the Western Wood hundreds of years before Pennywise, where they meet a terrifying ancient spirit. The half-hour special is streaming now.

What A Story of Derry Adds

The Instagram clip shows a Native American girl running through the woods with a bow ready. That image alone signals how far back the series is willing to push the town’s lore. Welcome to Derry already sold itself as a prequel to the 2017 and 2019 films. A Story of Derry digs underneath even that timeline.

Fans arguing online that the special feels like a cut season episode are not inventing the shape. A self-contained origins half-hour fits the leftover-chapter pattern streaming services use when they want a holiday bump without waiting for the next full season. HBO Max timed it for Halloween and kept the pitch simple: watch the origin story now.

Season 2 Is Already Mid-Script

Showrunner Brad Caleb Kane told Deadline earlier that Season 2 is greenlit, with scripts about halfway done and Andy Muschietti out casting. The next season is expected in late 2027 or 2028 and will be set during the Great Depression in 1935, circling the Bradley Gang’s stop in Derry from Stephen King’s 1986 novel.

Kane also said Season 2 will present Pennywise in a way audiences have not seen, with Bill Skarsgard returning in a different register of the character. That promise sits beside the Halloween special rather than replacing it. A Story of Derry feeds the mythology appetite while the writers room builds the 1935 arc.

Why a Holiday Drop Fits This Show

Welcome to Derry premiered on HBO Max on October 26, 2025. A year later, a surprise Halloween episode keeps the brand in the seasonal conversation without forcing a full premiere window. It also lets the series show origin material that a weekly episode order might have buried.

Kane is now sole showrunner for the continuing series after the Season 2 renewal. The Halloween special is a reminder that the Derry library still has unread chapters.
