A new meme from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security has sent the internet into meltdown. The official ICE recruitment account posted an image straight out of Halo, complete with the franchise’s signature Warthog vehicle and the message: “DESTROY THE FLOOD — JOIN.ICE.GOV.”

The post, which appeared on the DHS and ICE social media feeds, borrowed heavily from Microsoft’s Halo imagery — including the iconic ringworld structure. What might’ve been a tongue-in-cheek recruitment nod to gamers instantly turned into a progressive social-media firestorm. Many users on X, including Joe Vargas of the Angry Joe Show, voiced their displeasure in profanity laden rants at both ICE and Trump.
The Meme That Broke the Internet
The image, captioned “Finishing this fight,” shows soldiers in a Warthog below the Halo ring — unmistakably lifted from the Xbox classic. The tagline “Destroy the Flood” references one of the game’s alien factions. But in this case, ICE used the line as a recruitment slogan.
The result? Outrage, memes, and plenty of political fireworks.

The trend didn’t appear out of nowhere. Just days ago, GameStop jumped into the meme world when Halo: Combat Evolved was announced for PlayStation 5. The retailer declared that the “console wars” were finally over — sparking a flood of Halo-themed memes online.

When the Trump administration’s Rapid Response 47 X account joined in, GameStop fired back with an image of President Trump standing beside Master Chief. From there, the flood (pun intended) of memes never stopped — leading to this latest, unexpected crossover from ICE itself.
Political Memes Meet Gaming Culture
This ICE Halo meme comes as the Trump administration doubles down on immigration enforcement, and the image’s tagline, “Destroy the Flood,” is being interpreted as a symbolic nod to that mission. That alone was enough to light up social media and mainstream coverage.

Polygon derided the campaign while begrudgingly noting that GameStop’s stock had risen after its Halo memes. Kotaku revisited the agency’s earlier use of pop-culture imagery — such as a past recruitment video using Pokémon references — and concluded Microsoft is unlikely to pursue legal action.
The Times of India even reported that “gamers are united” against the Trump administration’s use of Halo art for ICE recruitment — though comment sections under the official post tell a different story, with many replies supporting the move or laughing at the outrage.

Hoo boy. Yeah, I don’t think this is that big a deal, but the image of a technical pointing a .50 cal at the “flood” of immigrants probably isn’t what ICE actually wants representing them, seeing as how their mandate is recovery, containment, and deportation, not border defense against invading armies. They’ll never win over the Marxist left, but there are a lot of people in the middle who don’t like ICE now, but could be persuaded that their mission is a good one. Things like this aren’t very helpful in that regard.
Meme them until they cry, and then meme them even more.

I love these. And the fact they are so triggering to the “right” people, like Angry Joe and Polygon, is even more delicious. Microsoft couldn’t sue the government. Since they haven’t sued anyone else for using Halo imagery, including GameStop in their latest memes, they have not established a historical record of protecting these images.
IANAL but I would also wonder if they can even sue for derivate works like this. Though they may have an argument that the sentiment is antithetical to their organization and is causing backlash to Microsoft, but that clearly isn’t the case. Everyone is dumping on Trump and no one has mentioned Microsoft being part of the blame circle.
