According to veteran X-Men writer Chris Claremont, Famke Janssen will appear as Jean Grey in Avengers: Doomsday — even though Janssen herself has repeatedly said Marvel never contacted her about reprising the role.
The claim came during a recent episode of the Power of X-Men podcast, in a clip that quickly made the rounds on Instagram. While reacting to Marvel’s newly released Avengers: Doomsday trailer — which confirmed the return of several Fox-era X-Men actors — Claremont casually dropped what may be the biggest casting reveal yet.

“The thing I find most wonderful about it is they’re bringing back… the original cast, including Famke,” Claremont said.
That single line has now detonated across Marvel fandom, because it directly contradicts Janssen’s own public statements.
Famke Janssen Has Publicly Denied Being Involved
Janssen, who played Jean Grey in Fox’s X-Men from 2000 through X-Men: The Last Stand and a cameo in Days of Future Past, has previously shut down speculation about returning.
She has said the question of coming back was “never” and “never ever” put to her.

That makes Claremont’s claim explosive — because if he’s right, she’s deliberately misleading fans to preserve secrecy around Jean Grey and her role in Avengers Doomsday.
Either way, someone isn’t telling the whole truth.
Why Chris Claremont Might Actually Know
This isn’t some random comic book writer speculating on social media.
Chris Claremont is one of the most important X-Men writers in Marvel history. He defined Jean Grey, the Phoenix Saga, Magneto’s complexity, and the modern identity of the entire franchise.
More importantly, Claremont has a track record of knowing things he probably shouldn’t.

At the Huntsville Pop Culture Expo last year, Claremont openly talked about characters returning for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars — long before Marvel confirmed them. One of his most notable claims was that Chris Evans would return, which Marvel has now officially verified.
He also stated that Elizabeth Olsen would return as Scarlet Witch and that Psylocke would appear. At the time, fans speculated Claremont was being used as an X-Men consultant for Marvel Studios — a role other veteran comic writers have held on previous MCU projects.
If Claremont is indeed consulting on the Fox-to-MCU crossover, then his Jean Grey revelation carries real weight.
And if Marvel let him talk this freely… it suggests the truth may be too big to contain.
The Trailer Already Confirms A Fox X-Men Invasion
Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday trailer already showed that this movie is going far beyond a standard Avengers sequel.

The footage confirmed the return of:
- Patrick Stewart as Professor X
- Ian McKellen as Magneto
- James Marsden as Cyclops
Those three alone signal that Marvel isn’t just doing a cameo gimmick — they’re resurrecting the Fox X-Men universe itself for at least this one film.
They’ve also confirmed appearances by:
- Kelsey Grammer (Beast)
- Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler)
- Rebecca Romijn (Mystique)

Suddenly Avengers: Doomsday starts to look less like Infinity War and more like Avengers vs. X-Men in everything but name.
This makes the absence of Jean Grey in the original cast announcement extremely suspicious.
Why Jean Grey Changes Everything
Jean Grey isn’t just another X-Men character — she’s the emotional and cosmic centerpiece of the entire original Fox saga.
Her Phoenix identity, her death, and her reality-breaking power fit directly into the kind of multiversal destruction Avengers: Doomsday is teasing.

If Marvel is truly merging Avengers, Fantastic Four, and Fox’s X-Men into one apocalyptic collision, then Jean Grey is essential.
