Is Mario Now More Popular than Mickey Mouse?

It would have been hard to believe even just a few years ago. Mario has returned to the big screen and is breaking all sorts of records. Now, companies are beginning to question: is Mario now the most popular cartoon / video game character on the planet?

For decades, two of the most beloved fictional characters in the world have been Mickey Mouse and Mario. Both are iconic figures in the entertainment industry, but in recent years, the popularity of Mario has surpassed that of Mickey Mouse. In this article, we will explore the histories of these two characters and argue that Mario is now a more widely known and beloved character than Mickey Mouse.

Let’s start with Mickey Mouse. Created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1928, Mickey Mouse made his debut in the short film “Steamboat Willie.” Mickey was an instant hit, and soon became the mascot of Disney, appearing in countless films, television shows, comic books, and theme park attractions. Mickey Mouse was a symbol of American optimism and hope during the Great Depression and World War II, and his popularity continued to soar throughout the latter half of the 20th century.

Now, let’s turn to Mario. Created by Shigeru Miyamoto and first appearing in the 1981 arcade game “Donkey Kong,” Mario was originally known as “Jumpman.” However, when the game was ported to the NES, his name was changed to Mario, and he became the hero of his own game, “Super Mario Bros.,” which was released in 1985. The game was a massive success, and Mario quickly became the face of Nintendo, appearing in dozens of games across various platforms, as well as in movies, television shows, and merchandise.

So, why is Mario now more popular than Mickey Mouse? One reason is that Mario has had more consistent success in recent years. While Mickey Mouse has been a beloved character for nearly a century, his popularity has waned in recent years. Disney has struggled to create new Mickey Mouse content that resonates with modern audiences, and the character has largely become a symbol of nostalgia. In contrast, Nintendo has consistently released new Mario games that have been both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. Mario has remained relevant and popular with each new generation of gamers.

Another reason for Mario’s popularity is his versatility. While Mickey Mouse is primarily known as a cartoon character, Mario has appeared in a variety of different media, from video games to movies to theme park attractions. This has allowed Mario to reach a wider audience and become a more recognizable figure than Mickey Mouse. Additionally, Mario’s popularity has been bolstered by the success of Nintendo’s consoles, which have consistently been among the top-selling video game consoles.

Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie will top a massive $830+ million at the worldwide box office this weekend, after a huge opening weekend and impressive second weekend that both exceeded expectations. It now seems certain the Nintendo video game adaptation will hit $1 billion as a top contender for highest-grossing film of 2023 by year’s end.

Furthermore, Mario’s appeal is also rooted in his personality and his ability to connect with players. He is a relatable character, with his signature overalls and mustache, and his adventures often involve saving the princess or defeating a villain. His games are challenging, but also accessible and fun, making him a character that both children and adults can enjoy. In contrast, Mickey Mouse’s personality is less defined, and his adventures are often less exciting or engaging than Mario’s.

It doesn’t seem to me that the new “edgy” Mickey cartoons compare to the traditional Mario movie, either in terms of aesthetics or market response.

Now, Disney has some real catching up to do… if it can even be done at all. Mario isn’t just wiping out Disney as the family box office leader… but rather the everyman plumber is becoming so popular that he is eclipsing the most recognizable brands on the planet.

And that’s something every company out there should envy — including Disney.

In conclusion, while both Mickey Mouse and Mario are iconic characters, Mario’s popularity has surpassed that of Mickey Mouse in recent years. This is due in part to Mario’s consistent success and versatility, as well as his ability to connect with audiences on a personal level. While Mickey Mouse will always be a beloved figure in the entertainment industry, Mario has become a cultural touchstone that transcends generations and continues to captivate audiences worldwide. This latest movie is just the absolute icing on the cake as we see Nintendo preparing to dominate entertainment for decades to come.

Very simply, since Mickey isn’t gay or transgender the current Disney creatives have no desire to utilize him or the other classic Disney characters.

They will continue to gather dust as Disney’s executives permit the creatives to march toward a sad and unbelievably frustrating demise.

So it seems that whole things about Disney losing the rights to Mickey Mouse might make sense given how they just use him as a logo to promote their parks this is very interesting, but anyways. It was shown that Pokémon was indeed the top highest grossing media franchise of all time which was more popular then Star Wars, marvel and Disney itself despite some lack of Pokémon tv shows, but the cards and merchandise do sell well especially the games on Nintendo switch I think if combine that with Mario that be sort like both Pokémon and Mario are the top two despite it being different brands and franchises, but they do fall under the Nintendo brand when it comes to gaming this doesn’t surprise me at all and now especially more people from what I hear may have less interest about Mandalorian with the toys and all just sitting on the shelves still last I checked at my local stores.
