You would think that the Luau at the Polynesian Resort would be fairly safe, given that its one of the last remaining resort flavorings that has existed since Walt Disney World opened. But a rumor from Mark48 on the WDWMagic Forums got me chatting with a few contacts… and it turns out, it might actually be true.
“This ” Rumor ” Is from my close friend who is employed as a DVC sales Castmember. The scuttlebutt is that the Poly Luau is permanent history and the area that Luau cove sits in and the surrounding area is to be the site of a new DVC tower. Can’t say this, if confirmed , would be good news. Not to mention the fact that it would overwhelm the property. Hoping he is wrong. Any thoughts ???” — Mark48
In fact, in a variety of different ways, it doesn’t appear that Disney is supporting the Luau. It doesn’t appear labeled on Google Earth or Maps, Disney has worked on pathing around much of the Seven Seas Lagoon EXCEPT near the Luau Cove building, and other people with connections (i.e. Martin) are saying it would not be a surprise for a DVC to go up.
Now I don’t know if a DVC is going up anytime soon, but the Luau Cove show is not looking good for a return anytime soon. The question is whether or not the retirement is permanent. According to my sources, there’s no attempt to bring back the Luau ongoing at this time. Maybe that’s because the Polynesian has been under major construction and they’re taking their time rolling everything back out? It could also be due to the difficulty in getting authentic performers during COVID.
At this point, the people who know for sure aren’t talking. But this is something to keep an eye on, especially if you’re nostalgic for Blue Hawaiian.
