J.K. Rowling has officially stepped onto the set of the new HBO Harry Potter series, marking her first in-person visit as production continues at a steady pace.
It’s a moment fans have been waiting for—especially as the author’s involvement has been a flashpoint since the reboot was first announced.
According to Deadline’s reporting, Rowling arrived at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden this week to inspect the series’ progress. The visit generated enough excitement behind the scenes that someone reportedly joked it felt like a “royal visit.” Considering she created one of the most successful modern franchises in publishing history, it’s not surprising the production team wanted everything picture-perfect before she walked through the door.

Rowling serves as an executive producer on the HBO Harry Potter show and has been deeply involved with the writers and casting process from the early stages. Back in June, she publicly praised what she had read so far.
“I read the first two episodes of the forthcoming HBO Harry Potter series and they are SO, SO, SO GOOD,” she said.

That praise doesn’t come lightly. The author has also previously highlighted the benefit of television as a medium, especially with its ability to explore deeper story detail than what a theatrical runtime can support. When the project was first announced in 2023, Rowling emphasized HBO’s promises during development.
She highly raised HBO’s “commitment to preserving the integrity of my books,” and added: “I’m looking forward to being part of this new adaptation, which will allow for a degree of depth and detail only afforded by a long-form television series.”

Of course many argue the integrity of the original work has already been undone through controversial casting decisions. The casting has generated intense online discussion—some of it celebratory, some of it contentious. But Rowling herself has directly addressed the swirl of commentary surrounding performers and public beliefs.
Much of the online debate surrounds Paapa Essiedu, who will portray a race-swapped Severus Snape. Esseidu also opposed Rowling recently over her strong position on gender rights in the U.K. Many assumed the author was going to have the actor removed from the cast after, but Rowling was crystal clear on her position.
“I don’t believe in taking away people’s jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine,” she said.

Rowling has not commented publicly on the casting controversy. Many have pointed to her depictions of Snape in the books as “sallow” and her drawings that show him as a White man as proof that the HBO series has already strayed too far from the source material.
Production Moving Quickly
Filming has been underway for months across Leavesden and various UK locations. The young trio leading the series includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger.
The supporting cast—Nick Frost as Hagrid, John Lithgow as Dumbledore, and Janet McTeer as McGonagall—signals HBO is aiming for a prestige balance of recognizable names and rising talent.

Francesca Gardiner is overseeing the writing, with Mark Mylod directing—two creatives known for grounded character work rather than flashy, surface-level spectacle. If HBO wants this adaptation to succeed where other recent legacy revivals have struggled, leaning into authentic storytelling instead of messaging noise is the right move.

Though, again, many argue authenticity has already flown out the window due to divisive casting decisions around Severus Snape.
What Rowling Visiting Means for the HBO Harry Potter series
For fans who never wanted to see the franchise leave its original author’s hands, Rowling’s set appearance will be a relief. It solidifies her influence, confirms she remains actively engaged, and signals that HBO isn’t planning to drift away from the source material. To others, it’s Rowling giving her stamp of approval to a massive deviation from her original work in the name or virtue signaling.

And given the cultural battles that have swirled around Rowling over the past several years, her presence will likely embolden viewers who felt alienated by Hollywood’s habit of rewriting the very stories it claims to honor and incense the online fury of those who oppose her stance on gender rights.

I’ll skip this series. Unlike Hogwarts legacy it is going to be too difficult to reconcile my value system with a production company that includes John Lithgow due to his activism on behalf of the Alphabet Mafia, the fact that Dumbledore will be gay from episode 1 (rather than a soft retcon from later) and the DEI hire for Snape and (arguably) Hermione.
Plus, I don’t think a remake is needed; there weren’t many key things left out of the movies. And nothing really that required twisting plot points or going off on some strangely placed (and probably transparent) exposition. Most of the things left out fall into the same category as leaving Tom Bombadil out of the LotR movies. The whole barrow wight/Tom interlude didn’t add anything. It wouldn’t have mattered that the hobbits got barrow swords (except maybe Merry’s since it was real magic rather than just well crafted). Nor did we miss out because they skipped over the brief mention of Ents. That was redundant since we meet Treebeard and he just repeats and expounds on that earlier mention.
I wonder what unpopular opinion JK Rowling will have in 10 years that will put pressure on these child actors to denounce and exile her like most of the original cast.
