Jake Lloyd, best known for his role as young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, has been released following an 18-month stint in a mental health facility as a result of what has been described as a “psychotic break.” Now in a rehab facility, Lloyd shared an inspiring update on his mental health journey.
Despite the ongoing media narrative that “toxic Star Wars fans” caused Lloyd’s problems, his mother actually praised and thanked the fans, saying their interactions with her son have been “theraputic.”

Now 35 years old, Lloyd has spent the past several years navigating the challenges of schizophrenia, a condition that has impacted him deeply since early adulthood. His recent progress reflects not only resilience but also the unwavering support of his family and mental health professionals.
Lloyd was diagnosed with schizophrenia following a psychotic break in 2015, an event that marked the beginning of a long road to recovery. He initially struggled to engage with treatment due to anosognosia, a condition common among those with schizophrenia that impairs the ability to recognize one’s illness.
This made it difficult for him to accept help or adhere to a treatment plan.

His mother, Lisa Lloyd, has been a constant source of support throughout this ordeal. In a recent interview, she spoke about the profound relief she feels as Jake finally begins to accept and engage with his treatment.
“Jake’s actually getting so much better,” Lisa shared. “It’s a big relief to see him making progress and being able to work with his doctors. Anosognosia was one of the biggest hurdles we faced, but now he’s taking his meds, attending therapy, and showing a commitment to getting better.”
After an 18-month stay at an inpatient mental health facility in Southern California, Lloyd transitioned to a rehabilitation center, where he continues to receive treatment and therapy. This structured environment has provided him with the stability needed to make significant strides in his recovery.

Lloyd’s mental health struggles were very public, culminating in a series of contentious interactions with law enforcement officers and a lengthy stint in prison.
In March 2015, law enforcement responded to an alleged assault by Lloyd on his mother. She reported that Lloyd had arrived at her residence, verbally berated her, and then physically assaulted her. Despite the incident, Riley chose not to press charges, citing her son’s schizophrenia diagnosis and his non-compliance with prescribed medication at the time.
A few months later, on June 17, 2015, Lloyd was arrested in Colleton County, South Carolina, under the name Jake Broadbent. The arrest followed a high-speed police chase that began when he failed to stop for a red light during a trip from Florida to Canada. Lloyd was charged with reckless driving, driving without a license, and resisting arrest.

At a hearing on June 22 of that same year, his bail was set at $10,700. During this period, his mother expressed concerns about his mental health, noting that he was not receiving his psychiatric medication while in custody. She also faced challenges in transferring him to a psychiatric hospital due to a lack of available beds. In April 2016, after approximately 10 months in jail, Lloyd was transferred to a mental health facility.
Lloyd’s mental health struggles were further compounded by the tragic loss of his sister, Madison, who passed away in her sleep from natural causes on July 16, 2018. This event had a profound impact on him, exacerbating his condition.
In May 2023, Lloyd experienced a severe psychotic episode. While driving with his mother, he turned off the car in the middle lane of a busy freeway, leading to a dangerous situation. When police arrived and attempted to communicate with him, Lloyd’s responses were incoherent, described as “word salad.” Recognizing the severity of his condition, authorities facilitated his immediate hospitalization, followed by admission to an inpatient mental health rehabilitation facility.

Jake himself is optimistic about his progress and candidly reflected on his journey. When asked how he was feeling, Lloyd responded by saying, “Pretty good, considering these 20 years of time that have come to an end. I can now accept taking on continued treatment, therapy, and my meds. Everyone’s been very supportive.”
The support Lloyd has received extends beyond his family and doctors.
Despite ongoing media narratives that have persisted for over a decade, the Star Wars community has rallied around Lloyd, with fans sending messages of encouragement and expressing their admiration for his courage.
The Hollywood access media routinely perpetuated a long-standing rumor that Lloyd’s early retirement from acting came from supposed “bullying” the child star received from Star Wars fans. However, Lloyd’s mother has been vocal over the last year saying that her son’s retirement was not caused by the Star Wars fans, but rather by a genetic pre-disposition to mental health issues.

Despite the difficulties he’s endured, Lloyd’s connection to Star Wars remains strong. He harbors no ill will toward the franchise that made him a household name.
“People think Jake hates Star Wars,” Lisa said. “He loves it.”
Jake himself expressed excitement about catching up on recent installments of the series.
“I’m holding out for May the Fourth,” he said, giving a nod to the annual Star Wars day celebrated by the franchise’s remaining fans.

“Mental illness is a long road,” Lisa said, emphasizing the importance of understanding and compassion. “But it’s not an impossible one.”

It’s not a surprise that the media would use a genuinely sick man’s condition to push their spurious narrative. This is the same group that seems to get off on standing on bodies before they’re even cold whenever something horrible happens.
It’s especially sickening to me that the media did what they did with him because I’m an aspie and know the pain and frustration of mental illness all too well. They deserve nothing but scorn, derision, and to be forcibly driven out of society.
Jake speaks in a word salad and fortunately gets the help he needs. Kamala speaks in a word salad and Libs think she’d be a great president. We live in clown world.
Jake was clearly having a mental breakdown. Commie-Law is that boozy relative nobody wants to admit has a problem because they think it makes *them* look bad. Which they’re right about.
