James Gunn called fans “racists” in a recent interview while admitting that he has no oversight from WB on DCU projects.
When in doubt, blame the fans. That’s been Hollywood’s favorite play for years now—every time a franchise stumbles or viewers push back, executives and creators deflect by smearing the audience with labels like “racist,” “sexist,” or “toxic.” Now James Gunn, the man at the helm of DC’s future, has joined that chorus.
Gunn’s Remark in GQ
In a recent GQ interview, Gunn addressed the reaction to Peacemaker Season 2’s alternate Earth twist. The alternate reality John Cena as Peacemaker has been escaping to all season is actually Earth X, which is dominated by N*zis and even includes fascist symbolism on the American flag.
Instead of acknowledging that some fans simply didn’t like the direction, James Gunn went on the offensive, labeling them “racists.”
“I have a few racists that have called me polarizing, but I’m okay with being polarizing and letting racists fall to the wayside,” he said. “People have loved this episode the most, so it’s exciting.”
It’s an alarming statement for anyone who raised valid concerns about his work. If you disliked the episode, James Gunn suggests that maybe you’re one of the “racists.”
Fan-Blaming: A Hollywood Pattern
Gunn’s tactic is hardly new. We’ve seen it repeatedly:
- Star Wars branded unhappy fans as sexist and racist after pushback on new characters.
- Marvel Studios dismissed fan criticism of unpopular storylines as “toxic.”
- Stars from Rings of Power and The Acolyte used accusations of bigotry to reframe underwhelming reception.

The cycle is predictable: when a project underperforms or sparks debate, blame shifts away from the creative choices and onto the audience. Gunn’s comments fit neatly into that pattern.
“I Can Do Whatever I Want”
Equally striking in the GQ piece is Gunn’s admission of just how much authority he holds in the DCU.
Speaking about Peacemaker, he said: “I really do whatever I want with Peacemaker—and I mean, in one respect, I do whatever I want with anything, because I am able to make my own choices and I’m my own boss.”

Many believed that WB CEO David Zaslav maintained some kind of control over Gunn. After all, Kathleen Kennedy and Kevin Feige at Lucasfilm and Marvel still ultimately answer to Disney CEO Bob Iger.
But Gunn even admitted that although there was pushback from “various sources,” he simply pressed ahead. That means Gunn not only disregards critics in the fanbase—he also brushes off executives who question his direction.
For Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders and DC fans hoping for a unified vision, this should raise alarms. Gunn isn’t presenting himself as a steward of beloved characters. He’s presenting himself as a free agent, accountable to no one.
Why It Matters
By conflating legitimate fan critics with “racists,” James Gunn has effectively shut down dialogue. Fans who simply wanted different storytelling choices are now marked with the ugliest possible label. And when that’s the playbook, accountability for creative missteps disappears.

Instead of introspection—asking why longtime fans might be unhappy—Hollywood’s solution has become demonization. Gunn’s remarks confirm he’s carrying that very strategy into the DCU.
Final Thought
James Gunn has every right to defend his creative work. But dismissing critics as “racists” is not only lazy—it’s corrosive. It alienates fans, undermines trust, and shows the very arrogance that has plagued Hollywood in recent years.

If DC is going to survive and thrive, its leadership needs to stop blaming the audience and start respecting them.
