In a recent exchange on social media, DC Studios co-head James Gunn said he is pausing development on The Authority. When Gunn took charge of the studio in 2023, he expressed enthusiasm for the film about a rogue squad of anti-heroes. Critics argue Gunn returns to that type of story too often.
The project was intended to be a key part of the Gods and Monsters slate that Gunn and co-head Peter Safran envisioned for the DC Universe (DCU). Now, it seems Gunn and his fans will have to wait a while longer to see that branch of the growing DCU develop.
Creative Pause and DCU Fit
While The Authority sounds like exactly the sort of project James Gunn would want to handle himself, he explained that this was never his plan. “I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority,” Gunn wrote.

He went on to explain why work on The Authority is taking a break. “The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon.” These comments remain consistent with Gunn’s stated philosophy: DCU projects will not begin production until scripts are fully complete.
They also seem to confirm doubts Gunn expressed early last year. Deadline reports that in February 2025 Gunn said that The Authority “is a very big movie, if you’re going to do it properly. Some of the story elements perhaps that are in Superman and some of the other films we fast-tracked, step a little on The Authority … [It’s] the one that got messed with through all of the other things that were happening. The script had a harder time coming along.”

As the DCU has moved forward on what Gunn is calling “The Superman Saga,” with this summer’s Supergirl and next year’s Man of Tomorrow, the overlapping story elements may have become a more glaring problem.
Tone, Source Material, and Audience Expectations
The comic book team was created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch in 1992. If The Authority film follows the tone of the comics, it will likely be dark and violent. The morally gray team often solves problems through extreme violence, often defying the wishes of world governments.

The Authority – DC
Many critics argue that the DCU needs a consistent tone. How The Authority would have fit into the bigger picture remains an open question. Last summer’s Superman underperformed at the box office, and its direct follow-up, the HBO Max series Peacemaker, was a sharp departure from the more family-friendly superhero film. Meanwhile, Supergirl does not appear to be generating much interest, even as industry observers say the DCU needs to build momentum.
Industry Context and Uncertainty
With Warner Bros. expected to come under new leadership through the proposed merger with Paramount, Gunn’s future at the studio is facing more scrutiny. His contract with Warner Bros. runs only through the first half of 2027. However, there is no official indication that he will be removed.

At face value, the pause on The Authority looks like a routine creative adjustment in a still-forming universe. Gunn’s explanation points to unfinished scripts and structural overlap, both reasonable creative concerns. Yet the repeated reshuffling of DCU priorities raises familiar questions about long-term planning versus reactive course correction.
Whether The Authority returns or not, it now sits as another example of how ambitious slate-building can blur under the weight of changing strategy and external expectations.
