DC can’t seem to make up its mind about what it wants to keep and discard from Zack Snyder’s failed DC Extended Universe. Now, James Gunn claims that his Max Original Series Peacemaker is canon to his new DC continuity after previously claiming it wasn’t.
Well, canon with the exception of one scene.

Peacemaker was one of the final canon Snyderverse projects DC released. The Suicide Squad spin off was helmed by James Gunn himself. The series saw the WWE’s John Cena return as the titular character for an action packed adventure that received mostly positive reviews. However, its timing was unfortunate, hitting TV screens just before Gunn wiped the Snyderverse from existence (Editor’s Note: Good riddance…) to make way for his new continuity.
This restructuring came with both positive (getting rid of Ezra Miller) and negative (getting rid of Henry Cavill) moves by the studio. But while it was announced that Peacemaker would return for a second season, Gunn had previously stated that the first season existed within its own continuity separate from his new cinematic universe.
Gunn was asked on Threads back in March 2024 whether everything in Peacemaker takes place after Superman, his upcoming reboot film of DC’s greatest hero.

“Season one isn’t canon, but no,” Gunn said in response, before noting that many strands of Peacemaker’s story will remain consistent. However, Gunn walked these comments back during a November 18th interview with Scott Collura of IGN.
“The truth is almost all of Peacemaker is canon with the exception of [the] Justice League [scene],” Gunn said, “Which we will kind of deal with in the next season of Peacemaker.”
The Justice League scene in question stands out as the largest obstacle to Peacemaker being canon to the DC universe going forward.

It features John Cena’s Peacemaker encountering the Snyderverse DCEU version of the Justice League, including Ezra Miller as The Flash and Jason Momoa as Aquaman. It also features the Superman and Wonder Woman characters originally played by Henry Cavill and Gal Gadot, though the two are never fully seen. This version of the Justice League has been wiped away in Gunn’s new DC Universe, which kicks off in theaters next July with the launch of Superman, starring David Corenswet.
The first TV entry into this new continuity, Creature Commandos, comes to Max in December 2024.
Do you think James Gunn can blend elements of the Snyderverse DCEU with his new continuity? Do you consider Peacemaker canon to the new DC universe? Sound off and let us know.
