James Gunn’s highly acclaimed Superman film will release on digital platforms earlier than anticipated, and the director and DC Studios co-CEO has now opened up about the reasoning behind this decision.

Gunn revealed that the early Superman digital release has a direct connection to the upcoming second season release of Peacemaker.

Superman, starring David Corenswet as the iconic Man of Steel, soared into theaters earlier this year and quickly became a moderate hit for the new DC Studios. Boasting positive critical reception and global earnings exceeding $500 million, the movie has revitalized interest in the DC brand. However, the announcement of its digital availability just weeks after its theatrical debut raised eyebrows among enthusiasts who cherish extended cinema runs.

In an exclusive interview with Screen Rant, Gunn addressed these concerns head-on. When questioned about the accelerated shift to video-on-demand (VOD), he expressed his own fondness for prolonged theatrical experiences but explained the necessity driven by production timelines.

“It’s a bit intricate, but honestly, it’s all about Peacemaker,” Gunn stated. “I had initially planned for Peacemaker to drop next month. But due to various uncontrollable factors, it’s launching sooner. Ultimately, my goal was to make sure anyone who wants to watch Superman can do so—even if they couldn’t make it to theaters—before diving into Peacemaker. That’s the core motivation.”

This revelation marks the first public mention of Peacemaker Season 2’s original target for a September premiere on HBO Max. The series, led by John Cena as the anti-hero Christopher Smith, picks up just one month after the events depicted in Superman.

The Peacemaker season 2 release date was announced to the public at the end of July, after the theatrical release of Superman, so the timeline alleged by Gunn in this interview works out.

Cena’s character even made a memorable cameo in the film, alongside other nods to the broader DC lore, including appearances by characters like Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr., who will return in the show.

The early Superman digital release raised many eyebrows throughout the film industry as the film had remarkably sturdy legs at the box office and continued to bring fans into movie theaters even a month after release.

Looking ahead, this interconnected storytelling in the DC universe raises intriguing possibilities. Gunn has hinted at ties between the film and series, sparking speculation about potential crossovers—could Corenswet’s Superman make an appearance in Peacemaker Season 2?
