Jim Carrey revealed he’s open to returning as Doctor Ivo Robotnik in Sonic The Hedgehog 4 despite announcing his retirement from acting in 2022.

Speculation swirled after his announcement, but despite supposedly calling it a career, Jim Carrey returned to the screen as everyone’s favorite literal-mustache-twirling villain in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 last month to rave audience reviews. He clearly loves the character, and the fans clearly love seeing him as Robotnik, as evident by the film’s 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Of course, once the credits had finished rolling, fans had one question on their minds: Is Jim Carrey coming back for Sonic 4

In a recent interview, Carrey said that he’s open to reprising his role as Doctor “Eggman” Robotnik in future Sonic movies. He jokingly noted that instead of retiring, he plans to “power rest.”

“I’m definitely open. I’m open to the idea, and generally, they come to me with the next idea, and if I go, ‘That sounds fun,’ then I’ll do it. I don’t feel locked to anything in life, unless it’s something that interests me. I certainly love this crew, I love this gang that makes these movies, and I love the fans. There’s a lot of really great energy around it, great responses, and the fans jump in and say, ‘How about if you do this?’ They’ve been super helpful. I think we’re all making this movie together.”

– Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey is one of many reasons why the Sonic films have done so well. Listening to fans, respecting the source material, and providing well-written stories void of divisive identity politics have also contributed to the franchise’s success.

Perhaps that’s why Disney has seemed so bitter about its success.

Over this past winter holiday season, Disney openly competed with Paramount Pictures for dominance at the box office. The House of Mouse even went so far as to reportedly bully theaters into showing its Lion King prequel, Mufasa, in more theaters than Sonic 3. This led to more families buying tickets for Mufasa by default.

Even so, Sonic 3 still outran Mufasa in domestic ticket sales.

As of this writing, the domestic total for Sonic The Hedgehog 3 is $207,897,862. Mufasa has garnered $194,298,338 in the US box office. Of course, Mufasa still has a lead on Sonic internationally, as the film opened several days before Sonic 3 overseas.

For many fans still giddy after a pair of well-done fan service Sonic 3 post credits scenes, learning that Jim Carrey is willing to be in Sonic 4 is definitely encouraging.
