Filming for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is underway, and Jim Carrey is reportedly back on set. Although his return is still unconfirmed at the moment by Paramount, fans are already hoping the rumor is true.

Jim Carrey has portrayed Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in the first three films in the series. His performance as the primary antagonist has been a central element of the franchise since Sonic the Hedgehog (2020). He returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022) and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024).

Carrey’s Comments

In 2022, the actor expressed interest in retiring from his acting career. However, he came back to play both Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather, Dr. Gerald Robotnik, in the third Sonic movie.

During an interview in 2024, Carrey expressed great interest in possibly continuing Robotnik’s story in a fourth Sonic movie. He said his openness depended on where the creative team wanted to take Robotnik next.

“I don’t want to say for sure, but it always comes down to what’s happening in the moment,” he said. “And the guys, Toby Asher and Jeff Fowler, call me up and say, ‘We have this idea. What do you think? In where we can take Robotnik.’ So it really comes down to that. I’m not against it, for sure. I’m having a fantastic time and I love the fans. I love the whole lore around the piece, and the game and everything. So it’s a really strong circle to be in. And I love also that these new guys, Keanu Reeves and and Idris Elba and all these wonderful people are signing off and going, ‘Wow, these are the guys that every guy would love to be. Why are they jumping into this world?’ They love something about it, and I think it’s the heart of this franchise.”

Status of a Fourth Film

Reports suggest that filming began on Sonic 4 in early March of this year. Currently, the movie is set for release in March 2027. Because of the early status of filming, Paramount has not yet released many details around production, casting, or story direction.

Although Paramount has confirmed little information at the moment, post-scenes from the third movie teased Amy and Metal Sonic joining the ensemble.

Cast and Character Uncertainty (Spoilers for Sonic 3)

The third installment, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, premiered in December 2024. In it, Carrey’s character Robotnik along with Keanu Reeves’ Shadow sacrifice themselves to stop the Eclipse Cannon from destroying Earth.

A post credits scene reveals that Shadow survives the encounter, leaving fans to wonder if Dr. Robotnik did as well. The latest rumors suggest that perhaps, he did. Given Robotnik’s last act on screen was unexpectedly saving humanity, it will be interesting to see where his character may go next.

Information around Jim Carrey being involvemed in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 remains limited. However, it appears that he may already be working on the next installment.
