We won’t know the ratings for a while, but Jimmy Fallon made big strides in restoring viewership to network late night television by daring to host a major Fox News personality who is currently leading all of evening comedy.
On Thursday, August 7, 2025, Fox News late-night powerhouse Greg Gutfeld made a highly anticipated appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, marking his first visit to a traditional broadcast late-night platform. Known for his acerbic, conservative‑leaning humor and stellar cable ratings, Gutfeld’s crossover felt like more than just a novelty—it hinted at a calculated move by Fallon toward ideological balance.

The interview unfolded as an amiable, nostalgia‑soaked chat. Gutfeld recounted the pair’s first meeting some fifteen years ago in a Hell’s Kitchen speakeasy—rendered delightful (and messy) by drunken tackling and wrestling, followed by a cigarette-saving gesture from Fallon. The segment followed Fallon’s familiar pattern of avoiding tough political questions, instead opting for friendly banter—familiar territory to critics who cite his 2016 Trump interview as emblematic of that softer approach.
But beneath the laughter lay a deeper subtext. Gutfeld’s praise for Fallon—remarking that booking him “shows he’s not worried about upsetting his peers” and that Fallon is a “great, genuine guy” focused on laughter, not anger—serves as a subtle acknowledgement of a broader strategic shift. In a landscape where CBS has cancelled The Late Show and viewership on broadcast late-night has crumbled under charges of liberal echo chambers, Fallon is positioning himself as politically neutral ground.

This isn’t entirely out of character for Fallon, who has historically avoided overt political confrontation—most infamously during his light-hearted 2016 interview with Donald Trump—but Gutfeld’s presence suggests the stakes are changing. With his show contract secured through 2028 and a new reality series in development, Fallon could be broadening his guest roster to include conservative figures to reignite interest across the political spectrum.
“The Tonight Show” audience was afraid to laugh at Greg Gutfeld’s stories last night, at least at first. It’s amazing … he was funny and engaging from the jump, but the far-Left crowd wasn’t sure how to process a right-leaning guest…

Gutfeld’s appearance was more than just a feel-good moment—it may signal a strategic shift for The Tonight Show. In an era where most late-night hosts lean left, Fallon’s move to book a polarizing conservative guest could be a bold attempt to reclaim viewers from the right and reassert late-night’s relevance in a polarized media landscape.
In an era that is likely to see both Colbert and Kimmel leave their platforms forever, along with similarly-minded former-titans like Howard Stern and Jon Stewart, it may be Fallon that laughs last. Moving to the middle may make him up for the task.

I have to give Fallon *some* credit. Out of all the “late night TV” hosts, he’s shown the most courage by hosting Greg Gutfeld and, more importantly, didn’t try and make the episode political. The aggregate ratings for the episode aren’t out yet, but the absolute meltdown by leftist media outlets like the Daily Beast indicate it was a hit with everyone else.
Why? Because leftist media is dying, they know they’re dying, and anyone who actually has any success drives them apoplectic with rage. There’s nothing losers hate more than seeing others succeed.
