Jimmy Kimmel has built much of his recent late-night career around mocking Donald Trump. At the Disney Upfronts presentation last May, he joked that his comments had cost the “company a lot of money this year, billions.” However, they have also earned Jimmy Kimmel awards from his peers.
Last weekend, the late-night host received his first Peabody Award, in part for “doggedly, asserting his rights to criticize the president and MAGA movement that sought to silence him.” Kimmel has at times framed himself as a defender of free speech.

Yet while accepting the honor, he suggested that receiving prestigious honors simply for making jokes about the president is actually absurd.
Ben Affleck Celebrates Kimmel’s Defiance
The award was presented to Jimmy Kimmel by Ben Affleck, who praised the late-night host’s willingness to challenge authority and referenced his brief suspension after making misleading comments about the alleged killer of Charlie Kirk.
“When they pulled his show off the air, Jimmy refused to back down,” Affleck said. “What he said to me was it wasn’t for his own benefit, but because he knows justice dies in the dark — I taught him that as Batman.”
Affleck continued, “Comedy and satire are vital parts of democratic speech, whether the government likes them or not.”
Kimmel Questions Why Political Comedy Wins Awards
In the opening moments of his awards acceptance speech, Jimmy Kimmel ran through a long list of unflattering names he has used for President Trump before noting, “and somehow we got a Peabody out of that. This country really has gone to s–t.”

“Making jokes about the president in America shouldn’t win you a prize,” Kimmel continued. “We have the right, guaranteed by the Constitution, to criticize and satirize our leaders.”
Kimmel’s remarks stood in contrast to the justification for the award itself. The Peabody organization celebrated his comedy as an important act of resistance and free expression, while Kimmel suggested that mocking the president should not be considered award-worthy in the first place.
While Kimmel portrayed his work as criticism and satire, not everyone views his jokes as harmless.
Critics Say Kimmel’s Jokes Have Consequences
Jimmy Kimmel’s recent joke about Melania Trump “having the glow of an expectant widow” drew significant backlash after another attempt on the president’s life occurred shortly afterward.
The First Lady responded directly, saying, “Kimmel’s hateful and violent rhetoric is intended to divide our country.” Going further, she added, “His monologue about my family isn’t comedy—his words are corrosive and deepens the political sickness within America.”

While accepting his Peabody Award, Kimmel appeared to downplay the significance of what he does on his late-night show. Yet the First Lady’s comments raise questions about the potential consequences of some of Jimmy Kimmel’s “jokes.”
The Irony Behind the Peabody Honor
Kimmel closed out his acceptance speech with more name-calling directed at President Trump. However, he also thanked him for “inspiring us to fight for our freedom of speech.”
Whether intended as self-deprecating humor or genuine criticism, Kimmel’s comments created an unusual moment of candor. Few award winners openly question the reasons they are being honored.
Yet by suggesting that mocking the president should not be enough to earn one of broadcasting’s highest honors, Kimmel may have inadvertently validated a criticism that has followed modern late-night television for years.
