CBS News is once again facing a major upheaval. Veteran journalist John Dickerson has announced that he will be leaving the network at the end of the year—just as Bari Weiss, founder of The Free Press, steps in as the new editor-in-chief. The back-to-back announcements mark one of the most dramatic leadership shakeups the network has seen in years.
Dickerson’s Farewell
In an Instagram post shared on October 27th, Dickerson revealed his plans to exit the network after 16 years.

“I am extremely grateful for all that CBS gave me — the work, the audience’s attention and the honor of being a part of the network’s history — and I am grateful for my dear colleagues who’ve made me a better journalist and a better human. I will miss you.”
CBS News President Tom Cibrowski praised Dickerson in a public statement, saying the longtime anchor “epitomizes the very best of journalism.” Dickerson will remain on-air through the holidays as co-anchor of CBS Evening News alongside Maurice DuBois before his departure becomes official.
Dickerson’s exit closes a chapter that began back in 2009 when he joined CBS News. Over the years, he hosted Face the Nation, served as the network’s chief political analyst, and most recently took over CBS Evening News in January following Norah O’Donnell’s departure.
A New Era Under Bari Weiss
The timing of Dickerson’s decision has not gone unnoticed. His departure comes just weeks after CBS announced that Bari Weiss would be taking the helm as editor-in-chief of CBS News — a move that many observers see as a long-overdue course correction for the network.
Weiss, founder of The Free Press and a former opinion editor at The New York Times, built her reputation on championing open dialogue and intellectual diversity. She has been outspoken about the dangers of groupthink in modern journalism, arguing that truth should take precedence over partisan loyalty.

Her arrival represents a significant shift for CBS — and perhaps for legacy media as a whole. For years, mainstream outlets have struggled with declining trust among viewers who feel the news has become increasingly filtered through ideological lenses. By contrast, Weiss brings a centrist, free-speech-oriented approach that could help restore credibility and reconnect the network with a broader audience.
Paramount Skydance’s acquisition of The Free Press and Weiss’s elevation to CBS’s top editorial role suggest a clear intent to modernize while moving away from political echo chambers. It’s an unconventional move for a traditional newsroom — and precisely the kind of shakeup that could help CBS regain its footing in an era when viewers are hungry for balanced reporting over bias.
Turbulence in the Newsroom
Since O’Donnell’s exit earlier this year, CBS Evening News has undergone near-constant change. Dickerson and DuBois were brought in as co-anchors to steady the ship, but the program’s ratings have continued to lag behind NBC and ABC. Now, with Dickerson leaving and Weiss ascending to the top editorial post, more turnover seems inevitable.

No successor has been named yet, though sources close to the network suggest DuBois may assume the solo anchor role in the interim. Weiss is expected to oversee content strategy across both broadcast and digital divisions—a significant expansion of authority that could reshape how CBS News tells its stories, which voices it highlights, and how it competes in an increasingly fragmented information landscape.
A Shift Toward the Center
John Dickerson’s departure marks the end of an era for CBS News — and possibly the beginning of a much-needed transformation. For years, the network has struggled to reconcile its reputation for serious journalism with the perception that its reporting leaned left. Dickerson, a fixture of the Washington establishment and a product of legacy media culture, often embodied that old guard.
Now, under Bari Weiss’s leadership, CBS appears ready to chart a different course — one aimed at reclaiming balance and rebuilding public trust. Weiss’s commitment to open dialogue and her willingness to challenge ideological conformity could help steer CBS back toward the middle ground that mainstream news abandoned years ago.

At a time when most major outlets have chosen sides, CBS may finally be choosing the center — a place where truth isn’t filtered through partisanship, and where fairness matters more than fashionable narratives. If Weiss succeeds, this could mark not just a turning point for CBS News, but a signal to the entire media industry that restoring credibility begins by restoring balance.

Wow, that note is full of humble bragging and shows his clear partisanship for a supposed unbiased journalist.
Look at the list of people he decided to highlight that had been on his show. A revolving door of middle to rabid leftist. If you still doubted his true colors he picks “Watching the Access Hollywood tape for the first time” as a highlight of his career. The tape that had Trump making the “grab them by the p***y” comment.
Yeah, good riddance to bad rubbish. I don’t think Bari Weiss is going to manage her goal, and I don’t think an organization with her at the top will be able to remove the bias since she’s biased herself, but it will be a damn sight better than where CBS is now.
….and nothing of substance was lost.
